Massive police operation as man armed with a chainsaw is shot lifeless after allegedly stabbing a girl and threatening drivers with a knife
A man who allegedly stabbed a woman and broke into a home armed with a chainsaw has been shot dead during a dramatic police operation.
Emergency crews rushed to a home on Heath Avenue at Tuncurry, near Forster on the NSW Mid North Coast, about 6.45am on Friday.
Police received reports a man, believed to be 41-years-old, had broken into the home allegedly armed with a chainsaw and a knife.
As they rushed to the scene, officers were told a woman had allegedly been stabbed by the man before he fled the home in a white 4WD.
A 28-year-old woman with serious stab wounds was treated by paramedics before she was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
A short time later, police spotted the 4WD on Stewart Parade and gave chase as it drove through a sportsground.
The car then reportedly crashed on the Forster Bridge.
Police were told the man had carjacked another vehicle and rammed a police car, leaving an officer with minor injuries.

A silver ute also sustained extensive damage
Police chased the man in the second vehicle along Idlewood Drive to Rainbow Flat where he parked at a home and ran inside while allegedly still armed with a knife.
It is alleged he then attempted to steal another vehicle and left the home before confronting police in a final showdown.
Police used a Taser multiple times before the man ran at and was shot by an officer.
Officers attempted first aid before paramedics arrived and treated the man, who died at the scene.
A critical incident has been declared in the Manning Great Lakes area and a large police presence remains. There is no ongoing threat to the community.
The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
