University pupil, 19, is discovered useless at lodging: Man, 34, is arrested

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 19-year-old student was found dead in her university accommodation.

Carla Georgescu’s body was discovered in her University of Lancashire accommodation, Ribble Hall on Victoria Street, on Thursday afternoon, Lancashire Constabulary said.

Officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a ‘sudden death’ at 1.15pm and police have said they are treating the teenager’s death as suspicious.

The 34-year-old man from Hartlepool was known to Ms Georgescu and has been arrested and remains in custody. He is yet to be named and was not connected to the University, LancsLive reported.

The force said they are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with their murder investigation.

Carla was in her second year of a clinical psychology degree at the institution, The Sun reported 

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesperson said: ‘We know that news of this young woman’s death and the police activity will be concerning to many, but we want to tell you that we have a team of detectives and uniformed officers working hard to try and establish the circumstances.’

The University of Lancashire said on social media: ‘As a university community, we are shocked and saddened by this loss and we are working closely with the police to support their ongoing enquiries.

‘Our thoughts are very much with Carla-Maria’s loved ones, friends and all those who knew her at this incredibly distressing time.’

Police have been going house-to-house and looking for CCTV footage in relation to the death, as well as patrolling the streets around the Preston Campus of the university using police dogs and a drone.
