Tributes paid to off-duty police officer, 29, killed when her Fiat 500 crashed right into a Land Rover – as man, 77, is arrested

Tributes have been paid to a ‘dedicated’ and ‘beautiful’ police officer who was killed following a car crash in Cheshire at the weekend.

Alice Mayo, who served with Cheshire Police for more than six years, died after her Fiat 500 collided with a Land Rover Defender on the A534 Spark Lane in Arclid, Cheshire, on February 7.

Ms Mayo, from Congleton, was off-duty at the time of the incident. Her force have confirmed the 29-year-old died at the scene.

A 77-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the crash but has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

In a statement issued by the police, Ms Mayo’s family paid tribute to her as ‘beautiful inside and out.’

The statement read: ‘Alice meant so much to so many.

‘She was a daughter, a sister, an auntie, a niece, a dog-mum to Ned the Cocker Spaniel, and a friend to so many.

‘She was beautiful inside and out. She will leave a huge hole in our lives, but also a legacy of laughter, fun, and sunshine. She achieved so much in her short life, and leaves behind a heartbroken, but incredibly proud, family.

‘Alice was at a time of her life where she was really happy. She overcame so much, but she never gave up. She was taken far too soon.’

Cheshire Constabulary chief constable Mark Roberts described the incident as ‘tragic.’

He said: ‘This was a tragic incident, and my thoughts are with Alice’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.

‘I want to pay tribute to our professional and courageous colleague. She was a dedicated professional who will be missed by all those who knew her.

‘We are supporting Alice’s family and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.

‘I would ask that people do not speculate about the collision and the circumstances around it. Please let our experienced and professional investigators carry out their work.’

Dan Price, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, added: ‘I am deeply saddened to hear about the death of Alice at the weekend. My thoughts are with those who knew and loved her and of course with the policing family that she was part of.’
