Andy Burnham declares assist for Keir Starmer and provides main by-election verdict
We’ll be bringing you the latest updates on this Breaking Politics News story
Andy Burnham has backed Keir Starmer saying the under-fire PM has his support – a day after he battled to save his premiership.
The Greater Manchester Mayor also called for “greater unity” and stability across the Labour movement after days of turmoil in the party’s ranks over the Peter Mandelson scandal.
On Monday the PM survived calls to quit from the Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, in what a senior minister described today as a “moment of peril”.
Asked whether he supported Mr Starmer, Mr Burnham told an event hosted by the Resolution Foundation: “Yes he [the PM] has my support. The government has my support. They had my support when I put myself forward for the by-election.”
Last month Mr Burnham was blocked by Mr Starmer and Labour’s governing body from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election later this month.

The Labour Mayor insisted today the by-election was “winnable” by Labour despite Reform UK and the Green Party pouring resources into the seat.
Mr Burnham also hailed the benefits of public control, adding: “I believe it’s what we should be working towards together with the Government and also bring pace and focus to lowering the cost of other of life’s essentials.
“To do that requires stability and I make my own call for that today across the Labour Party. Of course stability comes from greater unity and that would be helped by a more inclusive way of running the party but recent events make that now feel possible.”
