Roberto De Zerbi ‘quits Marseille earlier than he is sacked’ amid Man Utd and Liverpool job hyperlinks
Roberto De Zerbi has parted ways with Marseille by mutual agreement following the 5-0 defeat to PSG, with the Italian boss linked to Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham
Roberto De Zerbi has departed Marseille following the humiliating 5-0 thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain.
The Italian boss was rumoured to be on the brink of quitting the club last month, allegedly submitting his resignation mere days before the transfer window shut. However, De Zerbi has now officially walked away, with his tenure ending after Sunday’s crushing defeat to the Ligue 1 title holders – increasing speculation that he could be ready for a move to either Manchester United, Liverpool or Tottenham.
Marseille confirmed the news on Wednesday, stating: “Olympique de Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi, coach of the first team, announce the end of their collaboration by mutual agreement. Following discussions involving all stakeholders in the club’s management – owner, president, director of football, and coach – it was decided to opt for a change at the helm of the first team.

“This was a difficult, collective decision, reached after careful consideration and in the best interests of the club to address the sporting challenges of the final stretch of the season.
“Olympique de Marseille would like to thank Roberto De Zerbi for his investment, commitment, professionalism and seriousness, marked in particular by the second place obtained during the 2024/25 season. The club wishes him all the best for the rest of his career.”
De Zerbi was brought in by Marseille in 2024 after a stellar stint with Brighton. He departs with the club sitting fourth in Ligue 1 but trailing 12 points behind table-toppers PSG.
The Italian’s departure comes as speculation mounts linking him with several Premier League sides. He has been repeatedly touted for the Manchester United job, with the club considering options for a permanent appointment this summer, despite Michael Carrick flourishing in an interim role since Ruben Amorim was dimissed last month.

He has also been touted as a possible successor for under fire Arne Slot at Liverpool, with the reigning Premier League champions having slipped down the table to sixth in a nightmare season so far under the Dutchman as they have failed to mount any credible defence of their title.
And he has also gathered interest from Tottenham, with mounting pressure on Thomas Frank, whose Spurs side continue to struggle and are slumped all the way down in 16th.
Ex-United legend Jaap Stam has floated the idea that he would be a perfect fit for the Red Devils. Speaking recently, he commented: “I like De Zerbi very much, you know, because of how he performed at Brighton and also now in Marseille.
“How he’s playing with his teams, because he plays possession-based football, he’s very good on the ball. He also sets the players in certain positions that it makes it really difficult for the opposition to press them.
“You know, he’s going forward, he attacks. Scores a lot of goals, sometimes concedes, but you know that as a manager. “”But I think he’s also a good man-manager.
“I think he’s also good with the players and giving them the confidence, giving them the attention they need – and not only the starting XI, but also the other players within the squad. “”And that’s what you need in a big club like that.
“So I would be very happy if they don’t go for Carrick, and that they go for him. “
