Tiger Woods’ son Charlie, 17, makes faculty dedication in large subsequent step… however snubs his dad’s previous crew!

Tiger Woods‘ 17-year-old son Charlie has committed to playing golf for Florida State University as he tries to follow in his father’s footsteps and make it as a pro.

Charlie is the only son of the 15-time major champion, and fans had been waiting to see whether he would copy his father and attend college at Stanford.

But despite the family’s close connection to the school, Charlie is going it alone and has instead decided to play for FSU, staying close to home in the Sunshine State.

He announced his commitment on Tuesday afternoon, and will join Miles Russell – the No 1 player in the American Junior Golf Association Rankings – in a star-studded class of 2027.

Woods is currently a junior at The Benjamin School, alongside the likes of Kai Trump, where he has won a state title, shooting a team-best 68 in the process.

At that tournament, Florida State’s head golf coach Trey Jones watched Woods closely, and he has now got his man in a huge coup for the school.

While many had hoped Charlie would choose Stanford to follow in his dad’s footsteps – where he remains in the school’s Hall of Fame – it had previously been revealed that he was unlikely to do so, even though his older sister Sam goes there.

Speaking in December 2023, The Benjamin’s head golf coach Toby Harbeck had said that Charlie was instead keen to stay in the southeast and didn’t want to attend Stanford on the west coast.

Tiger joined the Stanford team on a scholarship in 1994 – majoring in economics – and he won eight tournaments in 1996.

A year earlier, he had been crowned the 1995 Male Freshman of the Year, and he was also 1996’s NCAA individual champion and National Player of the Year.

Tiger himself has played a strong role in helping Charlie decide his next steps, revealing last year that he was enjoying the recruiting process with his son.

‘It’s fun to be a part of the process with Charlie and go through it and see the opportunities that he has created for himself by playing better, places that he could play, wants to play and ultimately we’ll decide where he wants to go play,’ Tiger said.

The likes of Brooks Koepka, Paul Azinger and Daniel Berger have all been part of the Florida State Seminoles golf team in the past.

‘Our biggest thing that we’ve tried to teach him is that we want Charlie to be Charlie. We don’t want Charlie to be Tiger,’ Harbeck told Golf.com in 2023.
