Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has apologised after saying ‘the UK has been colonised by immigrants’.

The billionaire founder of one of the world’s largest chemical companies, Ineos, had said politicians needed to ‘do some difficult things with the UK to get it back on track’.

He told Sky News yesterday: ‘You can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in. I mean, the UK is being colonised. It’s costing too much money. The UK has been colonised by immigrants.’

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the comments as ‘offensive and wrong’, while Justice Minister Jake Richards said he was ‘hypocritical’ because ‘this man who moved to Monaco to save £4billion in tax is now lecturing us about immigration’.

Later, Sir Jim apologised for his comments, saying in a statement: ‘I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe.’

But what do you think – should Sir Jim have said sorry? Vote in our latest poll here:
