Man flies to Turkey for groceries and saves £20 regardless of flight prices

Bargain hunter Jordon Cox, known as the Coupon King, flew to Turkey for six hours to compare grocery prices – and still saved money despite the flight costs

A bargain hunting expert has put Britain’s shopping costs to the ultimate test – by flying to Turkey to compare weekly grocery expenses.

Jordon Cox, known as the Coupon King, left shoppers stunned after jetting to the popular destination for merely six hours to discover whether taking a flight for groceries in Turkey and returning with them costs less than a routine trip to his local Tesco.

He revealed on his TikTok account how he secured a flight for just £33, plus a return tram ticket in Turkey for just £1.44. Jordon explained he needed to save at least £35 to break even – and in a startling discovery, it emerged that flights, public transport and a grocery haul in Turkey cost him less than shopping at his neighbourhood UK store.

The Coupon King recorded himself browsing through Turkish supermarket BIM, examining various items he encountered – including Oral-B toothpaste, reports Birmingham Live.

He found three tubes of Oral-B 3D White Luxe toothpaste priced at £1.71 each, which would have set him back £5 per tube at the retail giant, according to the money-saving expert.

Among other items he highlighted was a multi-pack of Coco Pops costing £2.24, claiming the equivalent quantity at Tesco would be “over £10.”

Jordon purchased multiple products and following a four-hour flight was back on British soil – revealing his shopping haul would have totalled £89.38 at Tesco, but in Turkey amounted to just £34.34.

He demonstrated how he managed to save £20 – factoring in travel expenses – by remarkably journeying to Turkey. The money-saver penned in the video’s caption: “Flights this time of year are dirt cheap – and found a return flight on the same day to Turkey for £33.01.

“And I know food prices were super cheap out there! So whilst visiting the town and getting some sun on my face, I decided to do some grocery shopping – and see if I could do the WHOLE trip for cheaper than shopping at my local Tesco.

“We all know groceries are INSANELY expensive in the UK right now. They went up 37% between 2020-2025… but in Turkey, the same brands are much cheaper.

“I’m talking 84p Doritos, 49p Haribos, £1.71 Oral B toothpaste (norm £5), and £2.24 for the BIGGEST pack of Coco Pops you’ve ever seen (that’d be £10+ in the UK).

“I bought as much as I could. In total, all the shopping totalled £34.34… which if bought in the UK, would have cost £89.38 (£86.18 with a Clubcard).

“My total expenses including flights, trams, and shopping? £68.79. So in total, by doing my grocery shopping in a different CONTINENT, I SAVED £20.59 (or £17.39 with a Clubcard).

“And all I had was a backpack! That total could be much higher if I’d have brought a check in bag.

“Honestly – this shouldn’t be possible. Both supermarkets and people in power need to do something to reduce the burden… before we’re all flying abroad for Coco Pops.

“On the climate question… sure, it’s not the most environmentally friendly way to shop. But I filled an otherwise empty seat on the plane, and even if you ‘carbon offset’ the flight – it still works out cheaper!”.

“So serious question… have supermarket prices gone too far? And what can be done to make grocery shopping cheaper? Those questions need to be answered.”

Stunned shoppers reacted to Jordon’s discoveries, with many left flabbergasted by the price gap he uncovered.

One viewer commented: “That’s some difference! ! British prices have gone through the roof!”.

Another chimed in: “When the cost of living rises, workers need higher wages, businesses raise prices to cover those higher wage costs, and those higher prices then push the cost of living up again. welcome to wage price cycle.”

Whilst numerous people were left astounded by the costs, one individual highlighted that Jordon hadn’t factored in his journey to the airport.

They questioned: “Does bro live at the airport? it costs money to get there.”
