Thomas Markle attends Valentine’s Day social gathering to have a good time ‘good progress’ in his battle to stroll once more – however nonetheless no go to from daughter Meghan

Meghan’s estranged father is making ‘good progress’ in his efforts to walk again after having his left leg amputated below the knee.

Thomas Markle, 81, passed a milestone on Friday when he attended a Valentine’s Day party at the rehabilitation centre in the Philippines where he is recovering from the surgery.

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday last night, Mr Markle said it was ‘great fun’ to be able to join other patients and nurses for a celebratory lunch, complete with red roses and chocolates.

The retired Hollywood lighting director added: ‘I’m being very well taken care of and I am grateful for all the wonderful care I am getting.’

However he has not heard from his daughter since she sent him a letter a few days after his leg was amputated in December.

Mr Markle nearly died when a massive clot in his left thigh cut off the blood supply to his foot.

Doctors were forced to amputate his left leg below the knee to save his life.

He said last night: ‘I am adjusting slowly and doing a lot of physiotherapy. I am feeling very happy and am making good progress. I have a long way to go but am getting used to my new circumstances.’

The party marked the first time Mr Markle was able to wear ‘normal’ clothes – jeans and a blue shirt – instead of a hospital gown.

He is now doing daily physiotherapy sessions and is hoping he will eventually be able to get a prosthetic leg.

Mr Markle became estranged from Meghan on the eve of her 2018 wedding to Harry. He has never met his son-in-law or his grandchildren Archie, six, and Lilibet, four.

Mr Markle has been plagued with serious health issues. He had two heart attacks on the eve of his daughter’s wedding, preventing his attendance, and suffered a stroke in 2022.
