KEIR STARMER: ‘The system failed my brother – I will not surrender my combat for folks like him’
After a torrid week, Keir Starmer says he ‘will not give up on my fight’ for people who are struggling or have been let down by the system – like his late brother Nick
We all know someone the system did not work for.
For me, it was my brother. He had difficulties learning when he was growing up. He spent much of his life drifting from job to job in real hardship.
The system didn’t work for him. There are millions in the same boat. Held back by a system that doesn’t work for them.
Children in poverty who can’t fulfil their potential. Young people without the opportunities they deserve.
Families who work hard but still struggle. I’m fighting for them.

I am their Prime Minister, this is their government, and I will not give up on my fight for them.
Labour is delivering the change the country elected us to deliver.
Change from the mess the Tories left us. Change that Reform has opposed every step of the way – because the change they want is about division, grievance and tearing the country apart.
The change we are bringing is rooted in our values.
We believe every child deserves the best start in life, regardless of their background – which is why we’re lifting half a million children out of poverty by scrapping the Two Child Limit and extending free school meals.
We believe in the NHS – so we are investing more, delivering over five million extra appointments, and driving down waiting lists.
We believe in helping families when they are struggling – by taking £150 off energy bills, rolling out free breakfast clubs, and increasing free childcare hours.
We believe that everyone deserves fairness at work – so we’re raising the minimum wage for millions of the lowest paid and introducing the biggest expansion workers’ rights in a generation.
And we believe in living our values on the world stage, including rebuilding our relationship with Europe.
We know politics can be a force for good. We know it can change lives. And that is what we will deliver.
