Andrew appears to be like ‘dazed’ and ‘shell-shocked’, Queen’s former aide says
After Andrew Mountbatten Windsor was released from police custody on his 66th birthday, one former press secretary to the late Queen was shocked at his appearance
Stunned Andrew Mountbatten Windsor looked “shell-shocked” as he was driven away from a police station, a former aide of Queen Elizabeth said. The shamed ex-prince was a sensationally nicked on his 66th birthday on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
It made him the first senior royal arrested since Charles I in 1647. And he was snapped being driven away from Aylsham police station, where he’d spent 11 hours in custody before being released under investigation by Thames Valley Police.
A wild-eyed Andrew was pictured looking dishevelled and frazzled at his experience. Ailsa Anderson, the former press secretary to his mother Queen Elizabeth II, said: “He looked dazed, he looked shell-shocked, he was slouching down.”
She said the photo, now shared worldwide, would remind people of his “extraordinary fall from grace”.
And she explained that what happened to the disgraced ex-prince would cause a ripple effect within the Royal Family, saying they would now be feeling “bruised” and “shattered”. She also gave her opinion on King Charles’ damning statement on his brother’s arrest.
She said she was impressed at the “swiftness” of the King’s response to the former Duke of York’s detainment.
But she insisted that Queen Elizabeth, who had sat on the throne for 70 years before her death in 2022 “wasn’t in possession of the facts that the King is today”.
The photo, depicting Andrew slouched down in the car looking stunned and distant is reminiscent to that of his father, Prince Phillip in the weeks leading up to his death in 2021.
One infamous photo of the former Duke of Edinburgh showed the royal as stunned as ever after leaving hospital after several days of intensive care
The husband of the late Queen would later pass away weeks later in April of 2021, at the age of 99. Meanwhile, Andrew remains at home at his new address on the Sandringham estate taking in the news.
In a statement, Thames Valley Police said it was now ending its movements within the ex-prince’s new home Marsh Farm.
“On Thursday we arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office,” the force said. “The arrested man has now been released under investigation.
“We can also confirm that our searches in Norfolk have now concluded,” the statement went on to say. However, it is believed that police searches in Berkshire — likely his former home, the Royal Lodge in Windsor — will continue.
