Major UK grocery store chain to shut metropolis’s solely retailer in weeks as buyers fume

Iceland Foods has confirmed its Woodseats store in Sheffield will close on April 18, 2026, with staff being offered alternative opportunities within the company

A major British supermarket chain has announced the closure of one of its biggest branches. A spokesman from supermarket Iceland has confirmed the closure of its Woodseats branch in Sheffield on April 18, 2026.

The supermarket chain is renowned for its specialisation in frozen foods, but also stocks a broad range of other grocery products. Last year witnessed the closure of at least four shop locations across Margate, Inverness, Borehamwood, and Exeter.

An Iceland Foods spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the Iceland Foods store on Chester Road, Woodseats in Sheffield will be closing on Saturday, 18 April 18 2026. We are working closely with affected store colleagues to identify other potential opportunities within our network.

“The closest The Food Warehouse store is located at Heely Retail Park, Sheffield, and we look forward to continuing to serve customers in the local area.”, reports Yorkshire Live.

But that news didn’t stop locals taking to social medai to rage over the closure, as one called it the “best Iceland store I have been in far by,” as another called it an “exceptionally tidy and well organised” branch.

The distance between the now-closing Iceland and the reccomended Food Warehouse is around eight minutes drive, or at least a 35 minute walk. There is also a direct bus link between the two areas which takes around 15 minutes.

Or, if you don’t fancy the walk, there is a Sainbury’s directly opposite the branch, which is located on a main shopping street.
