‘Disgrace To Our Nation’: Trump Rages At Supreme Court Justices After Tariff Ruling

President Donald Trump raged in usually harsh terms at multiple Supreme Court justices after the court restricted his ability to impose tariffs on Friday, calling members of the court a “disgrace” and the ruling an “embarrassment to their families.”

“The Supreme Court’s ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing and I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” Trump said during a press conference Friday afternoon.

He accused liberal justices of being a “disgrace to our nation,” adding that the deliberative body is “disloyal to our constitution” and “swayed by foreign interests.”

The court ruled 6-3 to strike down some of Trump’s sweeping “emergency” tariffs on U.S. trade partners around the world. Conservative Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh dissented.

“I’d like to thank and congratulate Justices Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh for their strength and wisdom and love of our country, which is right now very proud of those justices,” Trump said. “When you read the dissenting opinions, there’s no way that anyone can argue against them, there’s no way.”

The ruling held that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, did not authorize the president to impose tariffs, and remanded the case with instructions to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction.

“The Framers gave that power to ‘Congress alone’ — notwithstanding the obvious foreign affairs implications of tariffs,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority. “And whatever may be said of other powers that implicate foreign affairs, we would not expect Congress to relinquish its tariff power through vague language, or without careful limits.”

Trump called the justices who voted against him “fools and lapdogs.”

“Others think they’re being politically correct, which has happened before far too often with certain members of this court,” Trump said. “And it’s happened so often with this court, what a shame. And having to do with voting in particular, when in fact they’re just being fools and lapdogs for the RINOS and the radical left Democrats.”

“They’re very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Trump reportedly made his displeasure known at a White House breakfast.

“These fucking courts,” the president reportedly said during a Friday morning meeting with a group of governors at the White House.

Trump called the decision a “disgrace” during his Friday meeting, NBC News reported.

The ruling will be costly for the Trump administration: In August, a U.S. appeals court ruled most of Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs were illegal but chose to wait to begin any refund process until the Supreme Court weighed in.

Trump’s hope of the Supreme Court ruling in his favor seemed doomed from the start. During oral arguments in November, Justice Neil Gorsuch warned of a “one-way ratchet” of authority from Congress to the president.

“It’s going to be veto-proof,” Gorsuch said of Trump’s declared emergencies. “What president’s ever going to give that power back? A pretty rare president. So how should that inform our view?”
