Brit, 24, amongst 19 lifeless in Nepal bus crash horror after plunge down mountain

A British national was among 19 people killed after a packed bus carrying 44 passengers drove off the Prithvi Highway and plunged down a mountain slope in Nepal

A 24-year-old Brit is among 19 people killed after a crowded bus veered off a mountain road. The bus crashed approximately 50 miles west of Nepal’s capital whilst journeying from the resort city of Pokhara to Kathmandu in the early hours of Monday.

According to police, 19 people, including the British national, lost their lives and an additional 25 individuals were injured when the bus left the Prithvi highway and tumbled down a mountain slope.

Only nine of the deceased have been identified so far, as per a statement from the Dhading district police office. The bus, carrying a total of 44 passengers, ended up on the banks of the Trishuli river near Benighat. Among the injured was a Chinese national, who is currently receiving treatment at the National Trauma Centre in Kathmandu.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency, quoting the Chinese embassy in Nepal, earlier reported that another Chinese national was unaccounted for.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, extracting survivors from the wreckage and transporting them to hospital, according to government administrator Mohan Prasad Neupane. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by authorities.

Bus accidents in Nepal are a frequent occurrence due to the poor condition of roads and vehicles. A large part of the Himalayan nation is mountainous, connected only by narrow, winding roads.

In 2024, two buses carrying a total of 65 people were swept into the same river by a landslide, with the majority of those on board either killed or still unaccounted for. The wreckage of one of the buses was only discovered this year, deeply buried in sand.
