Reform UK droop by-election campaigner over social media posts

Interim campaign manager Adam Mitula was suspended by the party after appearing to post a racial slur aimed at black people, and also a derogatory remark about Jewish women

A key figure in Reform UK’s by-election campaign has been suspended by the party over accusations of using racist and misogynist language on social media.

Interim campaign manager Adam Mitula, who had been working on Matt Goodwin’s campaign in Gorton and Denton, was suspended by the party after appearing to post a racial slur aimed at black people, and also a derogatory remark about Jewish women.

Mr Mitula reportedly wrote posts on social media site X in which he said he would “never touch a Jewish woman”, and claimed the Holocaust death toll had been exaggerated. He also reportedly claimed 60% to 70% of transgender people are paedophiles.

After Mr Mitula’s comments were first reported, Labour deputy leader Lucy Powell wrote to Mr Goodwin demanding he distance himself from the campaigner. She said: “You can ensure that they are not part of your campaign in the future, make clear that you disagree with their vile views, and state clearly that racism and conspiracy like this is not welcome in Reform and not compatible with campaigning for you”.

Mr Mitula has now confirmed he had been suspended by the party pending investigation, but claimed the social media remarks which led to it were “taken out of context”. He said: “I’m confirming my suspension as a Reform member pending investigation.

“The comments in question were taken out of context, and actually defended the Jewish community. The original article was published by the Manchester Mill, known for spreading misinformation and aligned with political opposition. My solicitor is contacting them and anyone else spreading false info that damages my reputation.”

Mr Goodwin, who has been backed by the far-right campaigner Tommy Robinson, is facing off with Labour’s Angeliki Stogia and the Greens in Thursday’s vote. Reform UK said: “With regard to Adam Mitula, our disciplinary process is confidential and we do not provide a running commentary on any potential cases that are being considered.”
