John Terry ‘annoyed’ by Chelsea choice after sacking as legend missed

John Terry admits to being ‘frustrated’ after Chelsea failed to include him in the interim coaching staff before Liam Rosenior was appointed as manager

John Terry was left disappointed by not being offered a chance on Chelsea’s coaching staff. The Blues icon believes he deserved an interim role on the Stamford Bridge staff before Liam Rosenior took charge earlier this year.

Before the former Fulham defender was appointed, Chelsea searched for an internal caretaker after parting company with Enzo Maresca on January 1. Calum McFarlane, former under-21 boss, took charge of the side for two matches.

Given his experience working alongside Chelsea’s youth side, Terry was left somewhat disappointed, as colleagues moved to the first-team dugout whilst he did not. McFarlane, who is now part of Rosenior’s staff, only held a UEFA B Licence. In contrast, Terry has a UEFA Pro Licence, the highest possible European qualification, and has worked in a Premier League environment as assistant to Dean Smith at Aston Villa and at Leicester City. And Terry has been kept in the dark over why he did not receive a call-up.

“(I wasn’t) annoyed,” Terry told Jimmy Bullard on his Golf Life YouTube channel. “Probably more frustrated because I was certainly part of that under-21s group that went over.

“So even if I didn’t take the team. Obviously, Calum took the team and did really well. Got a result out of the game. I feel like I should have been part of them.

“Now, listen. People have got to make decisions. I love it when people make decisions and they go yes or no. And clearly, ownership or whoever made those decisions, the sporting directors have gone “no”, not to include me for whatever reason – why, I don’t know.”

McFarlane steered Chelsea to a 1-1 stalemate with Manchester City, but suffered a 2-1 loss to west London rivals Fulham. Terry, meanwhile, found himself linked with other positions.

The former England captain has dismissed such speculation, having previously admitted he has abandoned hopes of pursuing a managerial career. Terry is satisfied with his part-time position at Chelsea.

“I got linked with the Oxford job recently,” he said. “Which (there is) no truth in it at all. I hadn’t spoken to them. Hadn’t kind of put myself out there. And I’m not (looking to).

“Like I’m in the academy as you know. I’m working with the 18s and the 21s. Love my role there. It’s (on) a part-time basis.

“I’ve always said if Chelsea ever come up (I would love to take over) but then, realistically, do I get Chelsea without doing the other bits? Probably not.”
