Voters must back Labour on Thursday to stop Reform and avoid “looking back in anger”, Lucy Powell has warned.

In a final rallying cry ahead of the crucial by-election in Gorton and Denton, Labour ’s Deputy leader also branded Nigel Farage a “phony” who goes against everything that supports the working class. Reform’s Matt Goodwin, who has been backed by the far-right campaigner Tommy Robinson, is facing off with Labour’s Angeliki Stogia and the Greens in Thursday’s vote.

Ms Powell was speaking on a red Labour battle bus emblazoned with the words “Remember the 350 mil for the NHS? You can’t trust Farage”, in a reminder of Mr Farage’s broken promises during the Brexit campaign.

In a reference to the Oasis classic, she told The Mirror: “We’ve just been playing on this bus ‘don’t look back in anger’, let’s not wake up on Friday looking back in anger because Matt Goodwin’s come through the middle. It’s only Labour that can beat Reform here.”

In an attack on Mr Farage, she added: “Nigel Farage is a fake, he’s a phony, he’s a charlatan, and he goes around making out he’s the hero of the working class, yet he goes against everything that is there to support working class communities.”

Also speaking on the bus, the Energy Secretary Ed Miliband labelled Mr Goodwin a disgrace, and claimed his comments about Britishness were an attack on his family. He said: “Angeliki has this great line that’s ‘not born here but drawn here’, and so many people contribute to this country who weren’t born here, how dare Matt Goodwin say that.

“I think about my Dad, who served in the Royal Navy, fought against fascism, and this guy says ‘well he wasn’t really British’. He’s an absolute disgrace. We are the people offering hope in this election, and Reform are offering hate. Matt Goodwin, the guy who says if you aren’t born here you can’t be British. What an insult to all the people in this community who work hard.”

Asked about the Green’s, Ms Stogia added: “They are promising pie in the sky politics, knowing they will never deliver it. Every vote for the Greens is a vote to let Reform through the back door.”
