Asylum resort use drops as bombshell migration figures present huge modifications

The number of people in asylum hotels has dropped to the lowest level in 18 months, figures released this morning show.
Home Office data reveals there were 30,657 people being accommodated at the end of 2025 – a 19% drop from the previous year. The Government has pledged to shut all asylum hotels by the end of the current Parliament – but Keir Starmer insists he wants to do so sooner.
At its peak in September 2023 – when Suella Braverman was Home Secretary – there were over 56,000 migrants in hotels.
The raft of data released by the Home Office also reveals the asylum backlog has fallen dramatically in 12 months, with a 48% drop in the number of people waiting for an initial decision. At the end of December there were 64,000 people, relating to 49,000 cases. This was 63% lower than the peak in June 2023, when the Tories were in power – also under Mrs Braverman’s watch.
At the end of the year there were 107,000 people getting asylum support, a 5% drop compared to 2024.
