- Soham child killer Ian Huntley is fighting for his life after an attack at HMP Frankland. Anthony Russell is suspected of carrying out the assault.
- It took place on Thursday morning in a prison workshop, with emergency services rushing to the high-security jail. Huntley was transferred to an external hospital where he remains in critical condition under close medical supervision.
- Russell, 43, from Coventry, is suspected of carrying out the attack with a makeshift weapon following a brief argument between the two men. The triple murderer is serving a whole life sentence with no chance of parole for a horrific killing spree in October 2020.
- During his week-long rampage, Russell murdered David Williams, 32, after wrongly believing he was involved with his girlfriend. He then killed Williams’ mother Julie, 58, to prevent her alerting police, and raped and strangled pregnant Nicole McGregor, 31, in woodland.
- At his sentencing, Mr Justice Wall described Russell as “exceptionally dangerous and manipulative,” adding: “You will remain in custody for the rest of your life.”
- A woman visiting another inmate at Frankland commented on Huntley’s condition, saying: “He’s in a bad, bad way. I shouldn’t say it, but it’s what he deserves.”
