Latest snow climate maps present March storm sweep UK as temperatures plunge

Weather maps suggest snow could fall across major UK cities later this month as an Atlantic storm sweeps in on March 14, with temperatures potentially dropping to 2C

Startling new weather charts indicate snow could blanket the UK in March – with major cities directly in the path. The GFS weather model reveals a storm system rolling in from the Atlantic on March 14, delivering rainfall to most regions. The precipitation is forecast to fall as snow initially across south-west England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Flurries are then predicted to shift northwards. By 9pm, purple patches on the charts indicate snow descending across North Wales, the Midlands and north-west England. Cities such as Stoke and Manchester could witness some of the white stuff.

Snow appears on the charts affecting western Scotland by midnight on March 14. Additional flurries might arrive in Manchester, the north-east and across the North Pennines in England.

Reports suggest temperatures could plummet to 2C or 3C quite extensively throughout the UK. The Met Office has indicated some snow is feasible later in March. Nevertheless, wintry downpours are anticipated to be restricted to northern hills, according to the national weather service.

The Met Office prediction for March 13 to 27 indicates: “After a potentially mainly dry and settled start to this period, more particularly towards the south or southeast, changeable conditions look likely to resume by mid-March, with Atlantic frontal systems spreading across all of the UK at times.

“These will bring spells of rain and perhaps strong winds, with the wettest conditions likely to be in the northwest, whilst the southeast will likely be driest. Some hill snow is possible in the north too. Some drier, clearer interludes are likely between frontal systems, but these are likely to be short-lived. Temperatures are likely to be near or slightly above normal overall.”

BBC Weather experts warn that “chiller outbreaks” may arrive next month. Weather specialists emphasise it remains premature to determine precisely how frigid conditions might become.

The BBC outlook for March 9 to 22 reveals: “Until middle of March, it is most likely that the UK will find itself situated between European high pressure and Atlantic low pressure and frontal systems. Occasional rain and brisk winds are likely, although indications are for near average precipitation amounts for the period as a whole.

“Milder than average conditions are expected overall, or at least near seasonal. There is a slight possibility that high pressure could build at higher latitudes in the second half of March, which would bring a chance of some chiller outbreaks, but at the moment that’s rather speculative and no significant early spring cold is looking likely.”
