‘This 11-1 shot is overpriced at Kelso’ – Jason Heavey’s Saturday ideas
The Daily Star Chief Tipster says a horse sent north to Kelso for its £120,000 handicap could reward punters at a nice price while at Doncaster an improving stayer can take the Grimthorpe Chase
CAPTAIN HUGO (2.55) can take command in the big betting race of the day at Kelso.
The talented six-year-old is sent north for the £120,000 bet365 Morebattle Hurdle and it could prove a canny move by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White.
Captain Hugo has won two of his four novice hurdles and is highly regarded. He gets into the race off a rating of 129 and I think he is much better than a 129 horse. He is also overpriced at 11-1.
It is competitive and he is up against some streetwise rivals but it could prove a masterstroke to miss Cheltenham and target this contest.
Hot Fuss and Hamlet’s Night have claims while Cracking Rhapsody looks solid as he bids for an amazing hat-trick in the race off a 4lb higher mark. Wise Eagle appeals as an each-way poke at 14-1.
DARTMOOR PIRATE (2.30) can ransack more prize money in the Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster.
The seven-year-old has already snared one famous old handicap at Town Moor when winning the Great Yorkshire Chase last month.
He needed every yard of the three miles that day to beat New Order, who he reopposes today, and the extra two furlongs should really play to his stamina strengths.
Anthony Honeyball’s beast is improving, unexposed and can confirm the form with New Order on 5lb worse terms.
It’s a good betting race and at 15-2 he looks a fair old punt.
QUEENS GAMBLE (1.55) has a bit of class and she showed it when winning with plenty in hand at Wincanton on just her second chasing start.
The generous handicapper has only put her up 2lb and I will be surprised if Harry Derham’s mare fails to follow up in the Virgin Bet Supports Safe Gambling Handicap Chase.
The Listed Virgin Bet A Good Bet Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle is wide open and LIVINGONAPRAYER (1.25) is worth a chance.
Jamie Snowden does ever so well with his mares and his five-year-old can build on successes at Huntingdon and Wincanton.
DOYEN DU BAR (1.10) has posted three solid efforts since switching to Nicky Richards’ yard, although he clearly failed to stay two miles and five furlongs at Market Rasen last time.
Back at two miles for the bet365 Handicap Chase, he has winning course form at Kelso and can concede top weight.
PROTEKTORAT (1.40) should enjoy nothing more than an exercise round in the bet365 Premier Chase at odds of 1-7, while STARMOUNT (2.15) gets the vote in a much more competitive bet365 Premier Novices’ Hurdle, a Grade Two race.
GOOD TO BE ALIVE (3.30) got the full Sean Bowen treatment to win at Plumpton when he promised that there was a lot more in the locker and he can win the bet365 Handicap Hurdle.
The ITV cameras are also at Newbury for two races where the in-form Paul Nicholls has claims of a TV double with BRAVE KINGDOM (3.15) in the BetVictor-sponsored veterans’ chase, while TWINJETS (3.45), who likes Newbury, gets the nod in the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup, although he will not want too much overnight rain.
Elsewhere Amo Racing’s VELVET RED (8.00, nap) left all her previous form behind to score at 25-1 recently and the Wootton Bassett filly is worthy of the nap at Southwell.
