Kristi Noem faces Senate grilling for first time since Minnesota immigration surge: Live updates
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is set to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, amid mounting scrutiny over the administration’s immigration policies.
It will be Noem’s first public appearance since the fatal shootings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, two U.S. citizens who were killed in January by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis, sparking widespread protests and unrest.
Since then, the administration has made efforts to de-escalate the situation in Minneapolis, including ending the “surge” of thousands of immigration and law enforcement officers in the city.
Meanwhile, DHS has been shut down since February 14 after congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump’s team failed to reach a deal on legislation to fund the department through September. Democrats have demanded changes to how immigration operations are conducted following the fatal shootings of Good and Pretti — and some have even called for her to be impeached.
The hearing is set to begin at 9 a.m.
Noem also set to testify before House committee
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is also expected to to testify before the House Judiciary Committee during an oversight hearing on Wednesday.
She will appear before the Senate panel at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
House committee to consider DHS funding bill today
The House Rules Committee will consider a measure to fund DHS on Tuesday, allowing for a potential vote later in the week.
