Wife ‘stabs’ soccer fan husband after mistaking VAR complaints as insults at her
A football fan had to be rushed to hospital while watching his team in action after he was reportedly stabbed by his wife who was angered by his shouts at VAR
A wife reportedly stabbed her football-loving husband after mistaking his complaints towards VAR as insults aimed at her.
The 40-year-old man, based in Naples, was watching Napoli take on Atalanta last month when the violent assault is said to have taken place, according to Italian media reports. El Tiempo reports that the incident was sparked after the fan began hurling insults at the TV after the reigning Serie A champions had a penalty overturned by VAR.
However, the wife reportedly believed the insults were in fact aimed at her with the EFE news agency reporting: “His 35-year-old wife interpreted his words as being directed at her, threatened her partner, and when he refused to leave the house, she first threw a pair of scissors at him and then several kitchen knives.”
Local media reports claim she then reportedly yelled at him: “Leave or I’ll stab you!” According to Gazzetta, after a failed attempt targeting her husband with the knife, she stabbed him in his side.
The man, who was bleeding, managed to contact emergency services but remained in danger with his wife continuing to throw knives at him, with one being planted in their living room wall. Upon the arrival of police, the officers stopped the attack and searched the woman, finding three more knives in her bag.

While the 40-year-old sustained several injuries, none were life-threatening as he continues to recover in hospital. His wife was subsequently arrested and remains in custody as she faces assault charges.
The game in Bergamo ended in the home team’s favour with Atalanta claiming a 2-1 win over the champions thanks to goals from Mario Pasalic and Lazar Samardžić. The defeat was Napoli’s sixth of the season as their grip on the title slowly falls with league leaders Inter Milan possessing a 10-point lead over second-placed AC Milan.

Napoli did get back to winning ways a week later as they claimed a nail-biting 2-1 away victory at Hellas Verona. Rasmus Hojlund, who is on loan at the club from Manchester United, opened the scoring before his early strike was cancelled out by Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro. Romelu Lukaku was the matchwinner as he netted in the 97th minute to claim all three points for his side.
