JD Vance Mocked After Trump Contradicts His Iran Claim

Vice President JD Vance found himself in a sticky position after claiming President Donald Trump would never allow conflict with Iran to drag just hours before being swiftly undermined by his boss.

During a Monday night appearance on Fox News, Vance insisted that there was no chance Trump would let military operations in Iran morph into an open-ended operation like Iraq or Afghanistan.

“What’s so different about this is that the president has clearly defined what he wants to accomplish,” the VP explained to anchor Jesse Watters. “There’s just no way Trump is gonna allow this country to get into a multiyear conflict with no end in sight.”

But just hours later on Truth Social, Trump undercut his second-in-command, writing that America’s “virtually unlimited” stockpiles of weapons meant that, “Wars can be fought ‘forever,’ and very successfully.”

Journalist Aaron Rupar didn’t hesitate to highlight the inconsistency on social media, prompting other politicos to share their own takes.

“This feels like deliberately humiliating JD at this point,” Vox’s senior politics editor Benjy Sarlin wrote on X. “He wouldn’t be the first vice president of his to get that treatment.”

Reporter Nina Starner couldn’t help but find some cynical comedy in the way Trump continually disproves his defenders.

“Unfortunately this makes me laugh every time,” she wrote on X. “All trump’s chuds try to go on cable news and say ‘no it’s not [X]’ and then trump just says ‘IT IS [X]!!! we love [X] don’t we folks’ out loud and makes them all look even more chudly.”

Even before Trump’s claim about a “forever” war, former MAGA ally and ex-congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene wondered if the White House was setting Vance up to be blamed for any military missteps, based on a New York Times report which claimed that after initially expressing reservations about intervening, the vice president argued for the U.S. to engage in an aggressive, regime-rocking attack on Iran instead of smaller strikes that could leave the door open for negotiations about the nation’s weapons programs.

Taking to X to weigh in on the Times’ account, Greene wrote that, “They hate JD. They don’t ever want him to be President.”

“So now that they fucked up so bad and they are getting our military members killed for Israel, it’s JD’s fault,” Greene’s X post continued. “Not Trump’s fault. Or any of the neocons screaming 24/7 in his ear. What’s the truth?”

Trump has been slippery about his justification for targeting Iran, swerving back and forth between claims that the mission was about dismantling the nation’s nuclear program or an all-out push for regime change.

During a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday, he claimed Saturday’s action was a preemptive strike.

“We were having negotiations with these lunatics, and it was my opinion they were going to attack first,” he said. “I didn’t want that to happen.”
