Punch the monkey makes heartwarming breakthrough as he bonds with fellow macaques

After months of relying on a cuddly stuffed orangutan for comfort following his abandonment, Punch the baby macaque has made a heartwarming breakthrough at Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Garden in Japan

Punch, the baby monkey who melted hearts around the world after being abandoned by his mum and finding comfort in a cuddly stuffed orangutan, has made a touching breakthrough. After months of clinging to his plush toy for reassurance, the six-month-old macaque has finally started bonding with fellow monkeys at Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Garden in Japan.

Recent footage shared by social media user @tate_gf suggests the zoo’s efforts to help Punch integrate with his counterparts are bearing fruit. In the video, Punch is seen seeking out physical contact with another macaque.

He is even seen climbing onto its back for a classic “piggyback ride”, which is an essential s ocial behaviour for young monkeys.

This reportedly marks a significant breakthrough, as it’s the first time Punch has been observed turning to a fellow macaque, rather than his toy, for comfort and companionship. While Punch still relies on his stuffed toy during moments of stress or uncertainty, keepers remain optimistic.

Interest in Punch’s progress has been extraordinary, with hundreds of visitors queuing to catch a glimpse of the young macaque and his touching story, Fox News reported. Online, supporters have expressed their hopes for his future.

“I’m hoping Punch has a good life like everybody else does, and think he’s a cute little guy,” one person commented. Another wrote simply: “Such a precious baby.”

Born in July 2025 and rejected shortly after, Punch was taken in by dedicated animal carers, who bottle-fed him and kept a close eye on his progress, the Daily Star previously reported.

The wildlife caretakers consequently offered Punch soft toys for comfort.

As a result, the tiny primate quickly latched onto a stuffed orangutan carrying it everywhere across his home in Ichikawa City Zoo, Japan.

Punch’s plush toy quickly became a substitute parent.

In January, animal handlers reportedly began carefully introducing Punch to a small group of fellow macaques.

Although he’s started interacting with them, he still keeps his beloved toy close as he gets used to life in the troop.
