Sex offender egged by protest group outside house in Cumbernauld

A rapist who assaulted a man with learning difficulties was egged by angry protestors outside of his home. The incident was caught on camera in Cumbernauld, where sex offender Paul McAllister had an egg thrown at his head.

The 47-year-old was jailed in 2012 after luring a his victim away from a hospital and subjecting him to a serious sexual assault. He lead a 42-year-old man away from A&E at Monklands Hospital and later raped him in a wooded area in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire.

Daily Record reports that furious protesters gathered outside a property on Woodhead Court in Cumbernauld on Sunday evening. Police were called to the housing estate, and two officers escorted McAllister from the property.

Footage shared with the Record showed the sex offender confronted by the mob, his face covered by a hoodie and balaclava. One protester then launched an egg which splattered on his head while he was being led into a police van.

The crowd chanted “beast” and “rapist” as he was placed inside a waiting marked police van. Police Scotland confirmed that no one from the protest was arrested.

During McAllister’s trial, the High Court in Glasgow heard in 2012 that his victim spent time at the hospital as “he felt safe there,” according to the BBC. But McAllister approached and encouraged him to leave the grounds with him, telling him “he could get him a girlfriend”.

The vulnerable man was then ambushed in the wooded area. He tried to fight back including trying to punch his attacker, until McAllister warned he would be “killed” if he tried to escape.

Advocate depute Gillian Wade, prosecuting, said: “It was while he was there, that the accused approached him and encouraged him to leave with him saying he could get him a girlfriend.

“He recalls that the accused approached him from behind in the wooded area and placed his arm round his throat. He was very frightened and tried to punch his attacker. He was told if he tried that again he would be killed.”

After the attack, McAllister went to his victim’s home with him. In the meantime, the hospital had alerted police to the victim’s disappearance, prompting officers to make a visit to his home.

When they got there, the victim rushed to the door, hugged a police officer and told him: “He is there don’t let him near me.”

The man also told officers that McAllister had raped him. McAllister forced his victim to give evidence, but pleaded guilty halfway through his evidence.

He was jailed for seven years and ordered to be supervised for a further three years after his release. He also had a previous sexual offence conviction from 1999.
