Trump ‘survives Iran assassination try’ as US forces kill unit chief
The US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth claims an Iranian assassination squad ‘attempted to kill President Trump’ and US forces have ‘hunted down and killed’ the head of the unit
An Iranian hit squad ‘tried to assassinate Donald Trump’, the US has alleged. Secretary of War has said Pete Hegseth revealed at a press briefing that American forces had eliminated the unit’s commander, telling journalists they had “hunted down and killed” the chief.
He told reporters: “Also yesterday, the leader of the unit who attempted to assassinate President Trump has been hunted down and killed. Iran tried to kill President Trump. And President Trump got the last laugh.”
Regarding American advances in the Middle East confrontation, Hegseth claimed the US is prevailing in its military campaign against Iran “decisively, devastatingly and without mercy.”
He indicated that additional forces including fighter jets and bombers will shortly deploy to the area. He stressed that the US “will take all the time we need to make sure that we succeed.”, reports the Mirror.
The bombshell came during a press briefing in which Hegseth said a US submarine had sank an Iranian warship.
He did not name the ship, but the Sri Lankan navy previously said around 140 people were missing after an Iranian ship, the Iris Dena, went down off the coast of Galle.
He also claimed the Iranian regime “are toast” and declared the US was “winning, decisively, devastatingly and without mercy”, suggesting even more military action was imminent, adding: “More and larger waves are coming”.
This claim was echoed by Caine who announced that the military would “now begin to expand inland, striking progressively deeper into Iranian territory”.
It comes as it is claimed the UK warship HMS Dragon is not expected to sail from Portsmouth until next week. It has just come out of maintenance and was earmarked to carry out a different mission before yesterday’s decision to send her to the eastern Mediterranean.
Two Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters, armed with Martlet missiles capable of shooting down drones, are expected to arrive in Cyprus separately and sooner.
In 2024, the US government brought charges against an Afghan national in connection with an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump before he was elected that year.
The Department of Justice alleged that Farhad Shakeri, then 51, was tasked with “providing a plan” to kill Trump.
The US government said then that Shakeri was believed to be in Iran.
In a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan court, prosecutors alleged that an official in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard directed Shakeri in September to devise a plan to surveil and kill Trump.
