Dithering Starmer must get a grip on Iran disaster as he is making a multitude of it

The Daily Star says Keir Starmer’s response to events in the Middle East is hardly filling anyone with confidence and the fallout is only set to get worse over the coming days

What a mess Sir Keir Starmer is making of handling the Iran crisis. The Prime Minister’s dithering response to events is hardly filling anyone with confidence.

Our slow support for allies in the region has left many questioning whether they can rely on us at all. The diplomatic and political fallout will likely only get worse over the coming days. Yet the PM seems to fail to grasp the severity of the issue.

He emerged yesterday (March 5) and blithely tried to insist everything is fine. But his words offered scant consolation to those who are affected by this affair.

Instead of providing a concrete plan of action, he offered the same old platitudes and meaningless phrases. The biggest giveaway appeared to be his admission that he hadn’t spoken to Donald Trump in days.

It says everything you need to know about how irrelevant the PM is considered. At a time of crisis, he seems to be totally out of his depth.

He needs to get a grip – and fast.

Thriving licence?

BBC funding has been in need of reform for a long time.

The way we watch TV has been utterly transformed since the licence fee was established in the last century. In an age of streaming giants in which households have more choice at their fingertips than ever, it’s hard to justify just continuing as normal.

But the issue has often been impossible to raise, as people seem to be divided into two tribal groups.

There are those who refuse to acknowledge that the system needs to be changed at all, while those on the other side call for the outright abolition of the BBC. Neither does any justice to what is, ultimately, a very difficult choice to make.

Fortunately Beeb bosses seem to have finally woken up to the complexities of the debate. They say they are “willing to consider radical options for future funding”.

This is refreshing to hear. The sooner this topic is settled, the better for everyone.
