Emma Watson’s turbulent love life: From her ‘horrendous’ break up with a rugby participant to a brief fling with a Glee star – as she confirms new romance with billionaire businessman

Harry Potter star Emma Watson has been linked to several high-profile figures, actors, and entrepreneurs since the late 2000s.

In the past, Emma, 35, has joked that she looks as though she has had ‘6,000 boyfriends’ because of the public interest surrounding her love life.

Speaking to Glamour magazine, she said: ‘Anyone I get photographed with is automatically my boyfriend. So it just makes it look as if I’ve had, like, 6,000 boyfriends!’

And on Thursday, she confirmed her new romance with billionaire entrepreneur Gonzalo Hevia Baillares as they passionate kissed during a trip to Mexico.

Emma was thought to be dating Kieran Brown last year, but has now found a new amour in the Mexican businessman.

Photographs of the couple showed them packing on the PDA while in the Mexico City airport surrounded by security guards.

Since then, they have been seen multiple times throughout Mexico’s capital as well as on a getaway to the exclusive beach resort of Punta Mita.

Gonzalo’s family owned a multi-billion-dollar mining company and his grandfather Alberto Hevia Baillères, who died in 2022, was one of the richest men ever to live in the country with an estimated net worth of $8.6billion.

A source told the Daily Mail: ‘Widely regarded as one of Mexico’s most eligible bachelors, Gonzalo now appears to be deeply smitten and reportedly taking his relationship with Emma seriously – having already introduced her to his parents.

’Without a doubt, Gonzalo and Emma are shaping up to be one of 2026’s most unexpected power couples.’

Gonzalo is the grandson of Mexican billionaire Alberto Baillères, who died in 2022.

His family are the third wealthiest family in the country and is said to have a net worth of $19billion (£14.2billion).

But long before this latest chapter, Emma’s relationship history had already captured the public’s attention – stretching back to her earliest days in the spotlight.

Emma’s first confirmed relationship was with Oxford University alum Will Adamowicz.

The pair met while studying at Oxford in 2011 and were first snapped at Coachella in the following year.

Emma told Glamour at the time: ‘My friend got me tickets [to Coachella] for my birthday, and what am I going to say? ‘No, I’m not going to go because I don’t want to be photographed?’

‘But it was a huge crowd, and I thought there was no way anyone could get pictures of me, but somehow they found me.’

By 2013, the pair had reportedly split due to their busy schedules.

‘Emma and Will separated last summer and are no longer in touch,’ the rep told the Mirror at the time.

She then went on to date rugby player Matthew Janney for a year before calling it quits in 2014.

A spokesperson confirmed the break-up was due to the actress’ ‘unrelenting work schedule,’ adding that the pair remained ‘amicable.’

In an interview with Vogue at the time, Emma opened up about how she bounced back after a ‘horrendous’ split with Matthew.

She told the publication: ‘I felt really uncomfortable.

‘I went on a silent retreat in Canada’s Rocky Mountains to help me come to terms with the breakdown of the relationship.’

However, the actress – who shot to fame playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series from the tender age of 11 – maintained her profile as a Hollywood star and global charity campaigner has not negatively impacted her romantic relationships.

‘I just think it’s very patronising towards men. It undermines them,’ she added.

Emma then started dating tech entrepreneur William ‘Mack’ Knight, with the pair first spotted together at a showing of the Broadway musical Hamilton in New York City in 2015.

Shortly after they began dating, William made is Instagram account private, and Emma explained her reasons for keeping her personal life under wraps in an interview with Vanity Fair at the time.

‘I want to be consistent,’ she said when asked why she would no longer take photos with fans.

‘I can’t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home. You can’t have it both ways,’ she said.

William graduated from Princeton in 2003 with a Bachelor’s in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

He then went on to get his MBA from Columbia Business School in 2011.

At the time, he was a senior manager at Medallia, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based tech company.

But after two years of dating, the pair ended their romance after they were last spotted on a dinner date in New York in late May 2017.

A source close to the Ivy League-educated pair told Page Six: ‘They amicably went [their] separate ways in early 2017.’

The following year, Emma struck up a short-lived romance with Glee star Chord Overstreet.

Despite a series of loved up outings, the pair ended their relationship after six months.

A source told The Sun at the time: ‘Emma and Chord kept quiet about their relationship at first but they really hit it off.

‘They spent a lot of time together in Los Angeles and were photographed quite a bit just a couple of months ago.

‘But things just haven’t worked out between them and they are both now single again.’

She was then spotted sharing cocktails with tech CEO Brendan Wallace, who is the co-founder of a venture capital fund.

By the summer of 2019, she had moved on to another tech millionaire, Brendan Iribe, CEO of Oculus.

Emma then began a relationship with Los Angeles-based businessman Leo Robinson, with whom she was first linked in October 2019.

While they largely kept their romance out of the spotlight, the actress took to X in 2021 to confirm to her followers that she was not engaged after she was spotted with a dazzling ring.

Emma’s Twitter statement clarified that she was not engaged to Leo, with the Bling Ring actress tweeting: ‘If I have news – I promise I’ll share it with you.

‘In the meantime please assume no news from me just means I’m quietly spending the pandemic the way most people are —failing to make sourdough bread (!), caring for my loved ones and doing my best not to spread a virus that is still affecting so many people.

‘I am sending so much love to you, hoping you’re ok and as well and happy as you can be in these strange times. And again, thank you to everyone working so hard to keep us safe and well.’

Later that year, their relationship came to an end.

She quickly moved on with Brandon Green, the son of controversial business tycoon Sir Philip.

They were first pictured together in September 2021, shortly after her split from Leo.

It was previously revealed by The Daily Mail that Brandon has entirely different career aspirations than his father, instead sharing Emma’s interest in the environment.

Both of them met each other’s parents and there were holidays including a romantic break in Venice.

Brandon had a reputation as a party-lover and previously dated a number of models.

He was once caught patting Kate Moss’ bottom on holiday in St Barts.

The pair dated for 18 months before ending their love story, with the split is said to have taken place after Christmas.

It was rumoured that the catalyst for their split was that Emma had some kind of epiphany connected to her ‘Saturn return’ and decided that she wanted out of the relationship.

In an Instagram post on April 15th to mark her birthday she wrote: ‘This is 33. Holy moly. Before 29 I hadn’t even heard of a Saturn Return as a concept. Let’s just say that now I am well acquainted.’

She went on to write about how she had re-evaluated her life and what she did with it, had learned to surf ‘badly’, ridden horses, done ‘a lot of therapy’ and ‘said goodbye to my Grandma and Grandpa’.

She added: ‘I cut my thumb nail off on both hands trying to cook for myself and then was only able to do things one-handed for months.

‘I felt really sad and really p***ed off about a lot of things. I learnt more about love and being a woman… It took me three years but I have finally figured out a daily practice and can actually keep it for more than a few days in a row.’

On the topic of ‘love and being a woman’ she didn’t confide about the break-up with Brandon, which she kept private, but the news later leaked out.

In 2024, Emma was spotted enjoying a romantic date with fellow Oxford student Kieran Brown.

The pair pictured at a pastry shop close to the University, over a year after she split from boyfriend Brandon.

A passerby who saw Emma, who was studying a part-time Master’s degree at Oxford, with her new date.

They said the actress was painting with the male companion at Port Meadow country park.

An onlooker in the pastry shop said the pair had a ‘nice vibe’ together and that customers didn’t appear to recognise her in the shop.

They said: ‘They were chatting together in the queue, they seemed to have quite a nice vibe.

‘I couldn’t hear what they were saying, apart from when she ordered – she got an espresso, a cake and a juice, or something similar.

‘She didn’t seem to try to be hiding herself, she was just queuing with him normally.

‘Nobody really reacted to her, but I could see people in the shop recognised her.’

Just days earlier, Emma and Kieran were seen leaning in for a kiss out in the street as she went away for a few days.

A source told The Sun: ‘She looked incredibly happy – like she didn’t have a care in the world.

‘Her suitcases were put in the back of a blue Range Rover by her security and she was saying goodbye.

‘They were incredibly close – they didn’t seem to care who was looking. They only had eyes for one another.

‘Emma loves Oxford and is here regularly because of her family – but it appears she now has another reason to love the city.’

Emma was thought to still be in a relationship with Kieran, but has since gone public with Gonzalo.

Gonzalo’s grandfather founded Mexico’s huge conglomerate Grupo BAL, which owns the country’s second-largest mining firm and high end department store El Palacio di Hierro, which is comparable with Harrods.

The heir to the family fortune is currently working as a CEO of an investment firm, HBeyond, in New York and previously founded a smart locker network across Latin America, said to be worth $115million.

He was previously romantically linked with Spanish singer Belinda Peregrín before they broke up in 2024.

The source added: ‘Baillères has kept his romantic life largely private, with only a few public relationships.

‘Between 2023 and 2024, he was involved in a high-profile romance with Spanish-born, Mexican-naturalised actress and singer Belinda.

‘The relationship ended in 2024, and according to sources, the breakup was difficult for the pop star.’

In October, Emma was pictured enjoying a ‘romantic’ Italian sunshine getaway with tech tycoon Austin Kevitch.

Emma and Gonzalo’s outing comes months after denying she was engaged, following speculation at the time that she was still in a relationship with boyfriend Kieran.

The actress had set tongues wagging when she was pictured sporting a ring at the Miu Miu show in Paris Fashion Week.

However, she then said on The Jay Shetty Podcast that she isn’t engaged and will not be pressured into exchanging vows because it’s seen as the conventional thing to do.

Emma, who has described the pressure to marry as a ‘violence and cruelty’ against women, wore an impressive, vintage-style ring on her engagement finger while attending a Miu Miu catwalk show in the French capital which caused people to question if she was engaged.

But Emma said: ‘I guess having gone through this odyssey, which has been the last seven years, it was like, okay, I feel like I’ve got to a place, and this will continue forever, where I want to celebrate where I ended up after I left land, it felt like.

‘I did a ritual with, I guess just a day of celebrating with my friends and chosen family. They each bought me this ring, which has 22 petals on it, and each of them bought one.’

She added: ‘I’ve just never owned anything so valuable in my life because to me, it represents the life that I’ve built, which was the one that I really wanted, which was one that was made up of community and my roots and faith and trust.

‘In some funny way, it signals to me that even though I have no signs of my success, save for this crazy one-woman play I’ve written, I don’t even have my degree yet, it signals to me that for me, I achieved what I wanted to achieve for myself.’

Emma added: ‘I’m just so happy not to be divorced yet. That sounds like a really negative answer, but I think that we’re being pressured and forced into this thing that I believe is a miracle.

‘I might never be worthy of it. I hope it happens to me, but I don’t feel entitled to it. It will either be part of my purpose here and my destiny, or it won’t.

‘I think the way we treat it as though, Well, why haven’t you? This is something that has to happen in this certain time span and at this certain age in this way. It’s the least romantic thing I can possibly think of.’

‘Truly, if I had tried to get married any point, basically before about a year ago, it would have been carnage. I just didn’t know myself well enough yet. I didn’t have a clear enough idea of what my purpose, my vision, how I was going to be of service.

‘I didn’t know where I really felt like I needed to be. I think I have some of those answers now. So when I meet someone, I can say “Hi, I’m Emma. This is what I care about”.’

She added: ‘I think it’s such a violence and it’s such a cruelty on people, and especially young people, I think, and especially women, to make them feel like they have no worth or like they haven’t succeeded yet in life because they haven’t forced to its culmination, something that I just don’t think can or should ever be forced.

‘It’s something that, honestly, I feel like I’ve had to earn, I’ve had to work for to be in a place where I feel like I can look someone in the eye and be able to tell them who I am and to have some idea – and it will change and grow – of what I want and what I’m here to do.’
