Ex-millionaire soccer membership proprietor Glenn Tamplin’s checklist of crimes since police attraction
EXCLUSIVE: Former Billericay Town owner and manager Glenn Tamplin became a well-known figure for his madcap antics but has recently appeared in court for a string of charges
Controversial former millionaire football club owner Glenn Tamplin smashed up a hotel room, nicked a belt and was caught with cocaine in a list of convictions since leaving the team he made famous.
Businessman Tamplin shot to fame when he became the owner of football club Billericay Town in December 2016 and they started splashing the cash, signing up former Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant and Spurs legend turned TalkSport host Jamie O’Hara to play for the non-league side.
What followed was a chaotic few years in which he took over as manager, installed a mural of himself in bed with his wife, left the club to buy another non-league Essex side and fell into financial hardship.
Back in 2023, Hertfordshire Police issued a wanted persons appeal for Tamplin after he failed to turn up at court, and since that appeal, he has been hauled before the courts on a number of separate occasions.
Tamplin has rarely been seen or heard from in the public eye since 2022 and has been caught up in a number of legal issues.
His convictions in full
- Possession of cocaine – Tamplin appeared before Colchester Magistrates’ Court in June 2024. He was fined £40 and the cocaine was ordered to be destroyed
- Theft – On July 10, 2024, Tamplin stole a water bottle and a belt worth a total of £7.98. He appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on February 18, 2025, and was ordered to pay compensation of £7.98. He was also handed a community order
- Criminal damage – In a three-day window between February 26 and 28, 2024, Tamplin damaged the radiator, tea tray and heating controls in a hotel room at the Pink Palace Hotel. He was ordered to pay compensation of £1365.99 during an appearance at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on June 11, 2024.
- Breaching a community order – Tamplin failed to complete the requirements of a previous community order. On October 19, 2022, he failed to attend his unpaid work, on November 4 of the same year he failed to attend an office appointment, and was unable to provide supporting evidence to explain his absence.
Victim of assault
Alongside his own convictions, Tamplin was the victim of an alleged assault in 2024, for which convicted murderer Tyrone Woolley had been charged.
When Woolley’s trial began however, the jury was discharged after just one day and the Basildon Echo now reports that GBH charges against Woolley have been dropped.
The court had heard how Woolley, who served 18 years behind bars for the murder of uni student Paul Carr, had chased Tamplin while armed with a knife and axe. Tamplin reportedly jumped 20ft out of a window to escape.
Woolley, of Church Road, Clacton, denied unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm, and inflicting grievous bodily harm.
A spokesperson for the CPS told the Echo: “We have a duty to ensure every prosecution is effective, independent, and fair.
“During a careful review of this case, we made the decision that there was not enough evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction for the charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and inflicting grievous bodily harm and these charges were stopped.
“We have kept the victim in this case informed of our decision making throughout.”
Rubbish dump at £10m mansion
Tamplin also hit headlines over a massive rubbish dump on the grounds of his £10million mansion.
Thousands of tons of waste – a mixture of building spoil and shredded matter – were dumped in the grounds of his home, known as Bliss Heights after his wife, after a crime gang took over the property following an assault on Mr Tamplin.
He is thought not to have been involved and has since sold the property.
Tamplin’s chaotic time at Billericay
Tamplin made himself a high-profile name during his wild reign running Billericay Town. After taking over the club, he appointed himself as the team’s manager and went viral on social media after getting his team to gather in a huddle and sing R Kelly’s World’s Greatest prior to a county cup final.
Tamplin invested his own money into renovating the club’s stadium – including the installation of a giant mural of himself in bed with his wife – but would step away from his role as owner and director in 2019.
He subsequently took over Romford FC, but did not last long.
Tamplin made his money in the steel industry after he was able to turn a £50,000 loan into a £40million fortune. In 2017, he was named the second most powerful person in the Essex Power 100.
But he has recently fallen onto financial hardship in recent years and blames the coronavirus pandemic for his struggles.
Addiction battles
He has also spoken openly about his battle against substance abuse and depression, which has led him on numerous visits to rehab.
The coronavirus pandemic had a seismic impact on his business ventures, with his main steel company going under due to the constraints it had on finances.
Speaking to the Daily Star in 2020, he said: “I’ve been bed-ridden for three weeks. I’ve been in the self-pity pot in a major way.
“And I’ve lost one of my key businesses due to this coronavirus, which was my main source of income.
“That is the thing that has affected me big time – a lack of income. I’ve not been used to that for a long time.
“I’ve been the worst I’ve been for the last three years. It probably would have been easier if I had been using.
“I had relapsed without using – but it was still a relapse.”
