‘I ranked UFIT protein shakes flavours from finest to worst – the highest is unimaginable’
A fitness fan taste-tested four popular UFIT protein shake flavours from Sainsbury’s and Tesco – including Salted Caramel, White Chocolate, Chocolate and Strawberry – and ranked them from best to worst
Sometimes it seems like we’ve become absolutely obsessed with protein. Trust someone who scoffs loads of it daily – we really don’t need ‘protein bread’ when there are far more tasty methods to smash those muscle-building targets. Since I can’t demolish a steak every single day – however much my stomach craves it – one of the simplest approaches to nail that target is through a protein shake.
Gone are the times when protein shakes tasted like licking gym equipment – nowadays we’ve got brands such as UFIT. These grab-and-go shakes – sold at major supermarkets like Sainsbury’s for £2 each and available in 25g or 50g protein variants – are crafted for hectic lifestyles where folk want an effortless method to nail their nutrition whilst still enjoying a delicious drink. Though, purchasing them directly from UFIT nets shoppers 10 bottles for £18, coming to £1.80 each and sparing the hassle of trekking to the shops.
Right, as someone who dedicates their entire existence to cramming gym sessions between hunting down the finest deals and bargains for Daily Star readers, this positioned me perfectly to tackle both their declared objectives. So I sampled their quartet of flavours – Salted Caramel, White Chocolate, Chocolate and Strawberry – and ranked them properly, reports the Mirror.
1st Place: Salted Caramel
I’ve got a sweet tooth the size of a 6ft 1inch ant, which has inevitably influenced my ranking. But blimey, I can’t resist the Salted Caramel UFIT.
Every time I stroll past the local Kaspa’s desserts, I find myself gazing longingly at the milkshakes depicted on their windows, like a little Victorian lad pleading ‘Please sir, might I have a scrumptious milkshake’. However, the gym enthusiast within me swiftly puts that little Victorian lad in his place (figuratively speaking) – consider the gains, young man. One of those milkshakes packs a whopping 850 calories.
Yet, I could easily pop a scoop of Halo Top ice cream into a glass with the Salted Caramel and essentially replicate the same experience without sending my insulin levels skyrocketing to the International Space Station. It’s utterly delectable.
Not only am I getting a solid 25g of protein, it’s conveniently travel-sized so I could take it into London when I was reluctantly hauled back into the office. The nearest alternative I’ve found is Grenade’s Cookies and Cream flavour which, although it offers 1g more protein at 26g, it also contains slightly more calories with 175 per bottle.
Runner-up: White Chocolate
White versus Milk chocolate is the Alien Vs Predator, or the Badenoch Vs Farage, of 10-year-olds in the playground: regardless of which triumphs, it’s still harmful for you. This becomes less concerning with UFIT’s beverages since they contain merely 158 calories.
The White Chocolate variety narrowly loses out on the premier position because I’m not daydreaming about it the way I am with Salted Caramel. Yet claiming second place in a tastiness competition remains rather impressive.
It remains effortlessly sippable and works brilliantly as a post-dinner pudding, since it feels indulgent despite the calorie count. With 11g of sugar it’s wise to stick to one daily, though it won’t cause harm at that level.
As a trial and because I’m a freak, I attempted creating tiny ice lollies from the White Chocolate and Salted Caramel varieties. Popping them in the freezer for roughly 90 minutes produces something resembling a mini-milk, but packed with considerably more protein. Genuinely could revolutionise summer treats.
3rd Place: Chocolate
I’ve got dreadful memories of chocolate protein beverages since, some years back, I fell for the marketing buzz and attempted to enhance my nutrition with Huel’s version. Yet one taste exposed the reality: to me, it was like consuming liquid metal.
Having quickly offloaded them to a mate who assured me they fancied them, I’ve avoided chocolate protein shakes completely ever since. Fortunately, I can process my trauma with UFIT.
Their chocolate variety tastes like a proper chocolate milkshake, rather than the nutritional equivalent of Lady Deathstrike’s demise in X2. It’s decent enough that I could probably down this daily without wincing, though it doesn’t quite scale the peaks of the other two for me. It pips strawberry because it certainly boasts a more distinctive taste.
4th Place: Strawberry
The strawberry variant of the four I sampled is the least sugary, so for those seeking pudding in a bottle, the alternatives might better serve your requirements.
I mean, it tastes like a strawberry milkshake – it’s genuinely difficult to mess that up. It didn’t exactly bowl me over like the other flavours, which I’m besotted with in ways I’m embarrassed to document online for posterity. For those who fancy less sweetness, this is likely your safest choice.
Verdict
Delicious, is the conclusion. At 158 calories and 25g of protein, it’s an remarkably efficient method of enjoying a scrumptious protein shake.
Whilst my top picks are Salted Caramel followed by White Chocolate, I honestly can’t discover much to criticise about them taste-wise. The 11g sugar content means I wouldn’t suggest consuming more than one daily, but as part of a balanced diet it’s like a tasty protein bullet launched straight into my gob.
