Tottenham ‘ready to bin’ captain Cristian Romero no matter Premier League survival

Tottenham are prepared to sell captain Cristian Romero this summer regardless of whether the north London club remain in the Premier League next season

Tottenham Hotspur may bid farewell to captain Cristian Romero this summer, even if they are still a Premier League club next season.

Struggling Spurs are in a fight to avoid relegation to the Championship and fall out of the top flight for the first time since the 1976-77 season. The north London club currently occupy 16th place in the Premier League, a mere point above the relegation zone, following the replacement of Thomas Frank with Igor Tudor.

Despite uncertainty over which league they’ll be competing in next season with performances even causing Jamie O’Hara to walk out of the TalkSPORT studio, club executives are prepared to initiate a comprehensive revamp ahead of the 2026-27 season.

And Argentina World Cup winning defender Romero is among those who could be offloaded to fund a reconstruction, according to The Telegraph. The 27-year old initially sought a move away last summer. He was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid. It is understood the La Liga outfit made an offer of £55m but Spurs stood firm on their £70m valuation of the centre half.

Romero ended up signing a new four-year deal last August and was awarded the club captaincy by then manager Frank. However, he has since experienced a challenging season, missing six matches due to suspension and voicing criticism of the club’s management on social media following a 2-2 home draw against Manchester City on February 1.

He posted: “Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible. I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available – unbelievable but true and disgraceful.

“We’ll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together. All that’s left is to thank all of you for being there and for always supporting us, the fans.”

He continued: “At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now. They only show up when things are going well.

“We’ll stay here, working, sticking together and giving our all to turn things around. Especially at times like this, keeping quiet, working harder and moving forward all together, is part of football.”

Spurs have now reached the conclusion that a separation might prove mutually beneficial for both parties. Atletico Madrid – whom Spurs face in the Champions League last 16 – remain amongst his suitors should the defender opt to depart.

Romero arrived from Atalanta in 2021, initially on loan but with an option to secure that arrangement permanently. Spurs ultimately proceeded with a deal, with the defender having since made 152 appearances for the club.

He is hardly the sole star potentially on the market this summer. It is also suggested that Spurs would be receptive to striking deals for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and full-back Pedro Porro.
