Need to know: SpudBros defend Ramadan hours amid online backlash
- Viral TikTok potato company SpudBros has hit back at critics after facing online backlash for extending opening hours during Ramadan.
- The Preston-based business, run by siblings Jacob and Harvey Nelson, adjusted their hours until 11pm to accommodate customers breaking their fast for Iftar. They also provided free water and dates to Muslim customers.
- The move sparked controversy with a flood of one-star Google reviews, which SpudBros branded as ‘bogus’ and have since been removed by Google.
- In a Facebook post, the company said: “It’s actually really frustrating and sad that we have to explain these things from serving potatoes in Preston. During Ramadan a lot of our customers are fasting during the day, which means they can only eat at certain times.”
- SpudBros revealed they received overwhelming community support, with “about 100 five-star reviews” for every negative one. A local donor even contributed £250 for 45 free meals, which the company matched.
- The business also addressed criticism over serving halal meat, clarifying they’ve been halal for nearly three years to serve Preston’s large Asian community.
- SpudBros said: “At the end of the day we’re a potato shop that just tries to do nice things for people when we can.”
