Cheltenham’s most violent brawls: from ladies rest room scrap to mind bleed tragedy
The famous Cheltenham Festival is known for its brilliant horse racing, but the racecourse has also been home to some brutal scraps and violent incidents between boozed up attendees
What happens when you stick a bunch of boozed up brits experiencing the highs and lows of gambling in a sweaty crowd?
The answer, if Cheltenham Festival is anything to go by, is the horse racing equivalent of Lord of the Flies, in which punters turn to cavemen (and in some cases cavewomen), and beat the ever-loving lumps out of each other over the most minor of disagreements.
Cheltenham attendees have lost hair, teeth and dignity battling it out in scenes that make Peaky Blinders look like a gentile period drama, with many it seems visiting the iconic racecourse for the primary focus of having a punch up.
We’ve taken a look back at some of the most violent scraps in Cheltenham history, from full on brawls in the ladies loo to blokes ending up with serious injuries after course-side punch ups.
The Battle of the Ladies Loo, 2026
Kicking off the list of Cheltenham’s most outrageous scraps is this remarkable skirmish that took place in the women’s toilets this year.
Video shows at least six women exchanging swear words and insults, before a punch is thrown and they all start going at it on the toilet floor (classy).
In the shocking footage, one woman is seen having her hair pulled from her scalp, while another appears to launch a series of brutal Zidane-style headbutts.
In the clip’s audio, one of the scrappers can be heard yelling “Get your f* ginger ****”, as another horrified onlooker gasps: “Oh my god.”
Security quickly descended on the fracas, and the women were removed from the premises, despite two of the boozed-up brawlers apparently locking themselves in a cubicle in order to avoid being kicked out.
An eye-witness reportedly told the Sun that the brawl had started because of a comment made about one of the women’s daughters.
Betting Shop Bash-up, 2026
The ladies loo wasn’t the only high profile brawl of this year’s Cheltenham festival, with the blokes clearly keen to give the women a run for their money when it comes to who can be the biggest embarrassment.
Footage from a mass melee in a betting shop at the course went viral on social media, showing at least seven blokes throwing punches and delivering headlocks.
It’s unknown what started the brawl that left fighters with bloody noses and, you imagine, a distinct sense of shame the next morning.
One particularly unlucky lad became the victim of viral torment after his subpar fighting performance was noted online.
The lad, who initially seems up for the scrap and throws a couple of punches at nobody in particular, is struck from behind by a fighting move that seems halfway between an Icelandic clap and a bear hug.
Whatever it is, the fella is left completely stunned, only to receive another blow from someone else, leaving him buckled over with his hands on his head in what can only be described as a position of total humiliation and defeat.
Despite the violent scenes, nobody is believed to have been arrested following either of this year’s viral scraps.
Pub punch-up causes brain bleed, 2024
A racegoer suffered a bleed to the brain after punched outside a pub in town on the opening day of the festival in 2024.
The victim was hit by a savage blow to the head, which left him unconscious on the floor.
The savage incident took place outside The Cotswold Inn which is a popular stop for race-goers walking to the course from the town centre.
Involuntary Dentistry, 2023
While 2026 has been the year of the scrap, it’s by no means the first Cheltenham marred by violent scenes.
Back in ’23, a bloke saw his tooth ripped out from its gums during a brutal punch-up on Gold Cup Day at the Best Mate enclosure.
It’s not know why the 39-year-old from Crewe was involved in a fight, or exactly how his tooth got removed.
Another man was left with a serious cut to the eye on the same day, although it’s not known if the two injuries were related.
All in all 2023 saw 7 arrests at the festival, 2 for theft and 5 for violent incidents.
Cheltenham boss sucker-punch
Even the senior staff at Cheltenham haven’t been safe from the violence, with the racecourse’s Head of Marketing receiving a punch to the face at a private jazz bar located at the course.
Matthew Foxton-Duffy was punched and subsequently hit his head on a door frame while inside the racecourse’s Gin and Jazz Bar, a pop-up marquee bar where racegoers paid an extra £95 to listen to Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Band.
Andrew Bentley, 28 and from Walsall, was arrested and charged by police, and would go on to plead guilty to assault. He was given a community order and made to pay £300 compensation to Foxton-Duffy.
