Shopping centre large Westfield in cyber hack alert
Westfield shoppers have been warned that its customer database has been hacked.
Customers at the two huge London shopping centres were contacted after the retail giant discovered a hack of one of its databases for loyalty programme members and newsletter subscribers.
It is the latest incident of a well-known retailer falling foul of cybercriminals.
Parent Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield said shoppers at both sites had been affected. Its Stratford mall attracts around 1m shoppers per week while its White City site sees just under 600,000 visitors a week.
Cyber attack: Westfield shoppers have been warned that its customer database has been hacked
In an email to customers, Westfield said information accessed may include names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postcodes, and dates of birth.
No bank details or passwords were taken, it said, and it has ‘no evidence’ that any customers’ data has been used fraudulently, but warned that ‘phishing attempts or other unauthorised activity may still occur’.
Shoppers should ‘remain vigilant’ and be wary of any unsolicited calls, emails or text messages, especially if asked to provide payment details.
