Star Paws: Expert reveals ‘most time’ you’ll be able to go away canine alone with out checking on them
How long can you leave your precious pups to fend for themselves? It might be less time than you think, as Star Paws columnist Catherine Lamb reveals
We love to take our dogs everywhere with us, but sadly there are some places they are unable to join us.
If you are planning an evening out, you may wonder how long is acceptable to leave your pooch alone before heading back home.
While it differs between dogs, four hours is usually seen as the maximum you should leave your canine companion home alone. “Age, breed, health, routine and past experiences all play a role,” Alyssa Ralph, canine behaviour and nutrition expert at Years, said.
While you are gone, your scent will fade, your dog will become hungry and they may need to use the toilet. This combination can trigger stress, which could lead to destructive behaviour, or your pooch becoming vocal.
If you have to leave your dog for a long period, Alyssa advises gradually building up the time you leave them alone, and focusing on mental stimulation before you go
“Quality time with you before you leave, calm departures, and making sure all their needs are met will help dogs feel safer,” she said.
“The goal isn’t to count hours, but to make sure your dog feels secure, appropriately stimulated and supported while you’re away.”
Mum’s best friend
It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, and mum’s favourite furry friend doesn’t have to miss out on the fun.
Here’s how to celebrate Mothering Sunday with all the family – canine companions included…
- Go on a day trip. Take the whole family out and get exploring together. You could visit a new city, go to the park or take a stroll along the beach. Make it extra special by packing a picnic for everyone to enjoy.
- Take her for brunch. Visit a coffee shop and treat mum to a special brunch date with her favourite furry friend. There are many cafés which are dog-friendly and some even serve puppuccinos!
- Fix up a feast. Cook a delicious roast dinner for mum to enjoy with all the family – just make sure to only give your furry family member dog-safe scraps.
- Enjoy a lazy day together. All mums deserve a rest so if she just wants a quiet one, pop on a movie and grab her a blanket so she can snuggle up on the sofa with her favourite four-legged friend.
