BREAKING Two college students die and 11 in hospital after outbreak of meningitis at UK uni as warning issued

Two university students have died in a meningitis outbreak at a UK university. Kent University has been hit with an outbreak of “invasive” meningitis. It is understood 11 students from the Canterbury area have fallen seriously ill and are currently in hospital.

The BBC have reported more than 30,000 staff members, students and families are being contacted by UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on the outbreak.

UKHSA regional deputy director for the South East, Trish Mannes, has warned students are at risk of of missing symptoms due to them being confused as “a bad cold, flu, or even a hangover”.

The UKHSA regional deputy director said: “Students and staff will understandably be feeling worried about the risk of further cases; however, we would like to reassure them that close contacts of cases have been given antibiotics as a precautionary measure.”

Meningitis symptoms can include a high fever, being sick and a severe and worsening headaches. Meningitis can also cause the life threating condition sepsis.
