United’s advantage lasted merely 11 minutes before Ross Barkley struck hard and low into the net, restoring Villa’s parity. Matheus Cunha delivering an excellent finish to restore the Red Devils’ lead before Benjamin Sesko wrapped it up.
Daily Star Sport assesses and critiques the United players following today’s crucial victory…
Senne Lammens, 6/10 – Produced a vital save to thwart Amadou Onana moments before Barkley found the bottom corner, which he couldn’t prevent, reports the Express.
Diogo Dalot, 4/10 – Squandered an excellent opportunity to score from close range, losing all composure and blazing well over. Didn’t contribute much else of note. Poor showing.
Leny Yoro, 8/10 – Enjoyed a solid outing. Delivered a superb sliding challenge to prevent Ollie Watkins from getting a strike away towards the close of the opening period.
Harry Maguire, 7/10 – Assured in possession, utilising his distribution to launch forward moves from deep, and proved reliable at the back.
Luke Shaw, 7/10 – Executed some intelligent runs to trouble Villa down the left wing. Fulfilled his defensive responsibilities adequately as well.
Casemiro, 9/10 – Remained heavily engaged across all sections of the field and frequently positioned himself as United’s most advanced midfielder. Netted a superb header to open the scoring. Set the standard alongside Bruno Fernandes.
Kobbie Mainoo, 7/10 – Assisted his side’s progression with some direct dribbling and astute distribution through the centre. A solid showing.
Bruno Fernandes, 9/10 – Claimed two assists, delivering the corner for Casemiro’s header and locating Cunha with a world-class through pass for United’s second strike. Rose to the occasion when required to dictate proceedings in the second period.
Amad, 6/10 – Compelled a fine stop from Emi Martinez with a directed header towards the bottom corner, but remained more subdued than typical.
Matheus Cunha, 8/10 – Caused havoc out wide, whipping in some threatening deliveries. Conjured a moment of genuine class to net the decisive goal, which is precisely why United acquired him.
Bryan Mbeumo, 6/10 – Began tentatively but managed to elevate his performance after the interval. It wasn’t classic Mbeumo, however, with some of his colleagues deservedly receiving greater recognition.
Benjamin Sesko, 8/10 – Predictably, he scored just five minutes after being substituted on with a beautifully executed shot on the turn. A massively significant goal that confirmed the outcome.
Manuel Ugarte, n/a – He was brought on in the final moments when the match was already decided. Managed to get a few minutes of play time.
