Over the decades there have been plenty of shocking moments that have made the world gasp. From a streaker to a slap, the bash often gets people talking. The Daily Star has picked the most controversial moments.
Streaker storms the stage — 1974
David Niven was announcing Elizabeth Taylor would be presenting an award when things turned racy. Art gallery owner Robert Opel ran across the stage completely naked. It left the audience stunned.
David joked: “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?” Elizabeth then said: “That’s a pretty hard act to follow”.
Things get political — 1993
Three A List stars sparked controversy by talking about politics at the ceremony. Richard Gere slammed China for invading Tibet while Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins spoke out about the way people with HIV were being treated in Haiti.
The producer was so annoyed by them he warned they were all banned from future awards. Susan and Tim have since attended.
Crash pulls off surprise victory — 2006
Low-budget Indie film Crash had the most surprising victory in Occars history when it beat Brokeback Mountain to nab Best Picture.
The result sent shockwaves around the world. Jack Nicholson was seen looking visibly shocked by the news and mouthed: “Woah!”. Since then critics have speculated it is the worst film to ever win the top gong.
A major gaffe — 2017
Faye Dunaway announced La La Land had won Best Picture and the cast rushed to the stage. But moments later its producer Jordan Horowitz announced she’d got it wrong and Moonlight had actually won the gong.
It later emerged Faye’s co-host Warren Beatty had been given the wrong envelope.
Will Smith turns violent — 2022
Chris Smith got a bad reaction when he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia when he was hosting the Oscars.
It annoyed her husband Will Smith who stormed the stage before slapping Chris. Men In Black star Will was banned from attending for a decade over his outburst.
