Suits you sir! John Lewis hails return of the tie

John Lewis has hailed the return of the suit and tie – but they are not necessarily being worn at the same time.

Suits are enjoying a revival as more people go back to working in the office, with sales up by 31 per cent last year, the department store said.

But celebrities such as singer Harry Styles have also given a boost to unloved neckwear, showing it does not necessarily have to be part of a smart outfit. The firm said tie sales rose by 11 per cent last year.

Tomas Warwick, head of merchandising for John Lewis menswear, cited ‘the increasing return to the office, which is seeing people shake off their sweatshirts in favour of something smarter’.

The suit and tie had previously appeared doomed to extinction after the pandemic drove millions to take up working from home.
