‘I examined two sleep sprays and one 11p-a-night bottle had me drifting off in minutes’

A beauty writer tested two popular sleep sprays to see which pillow mist is worth shoppers’ money.

Lying in bed, knackered but unable to nod off, is always frustrating and an issue many of us grapple with. Over the years, I’ve tried numerous tricks to tackle sleeplessness, from magnesium tablets to bedtime tales, but none have resonated quite like a sleep spray.

I recently stumbled upon the Kloris Soothing Mist, an aromatherapy spray initially used in luxury London spas, now repackaged as a home product to help people create a more tranquil environment. After using it for a few weeks, I’ve found it helps me drop off within a minute or two.

However, the Kloris Soothing Mist isn’t the only sleep spray out there, so to give it a proper run for its money, I got hold of another soothing contender, The White Company Sleep Soothing Pillow Mist. If it wasn’t obvious already, I take my sleep very seriously, so I was keen to see which spray would emerge victorious in terms of price, aroma, durability, packaging and most crucially, effectiveness at helping me drift off, reports the Mirror.

Price

Sleep sprays are a nightly staple, so a reasonable cost per spray is key. The White Company Mist is £22 for 150ml at Selfridges, making it cheaper than the Kloris Soothing Mist, which comes to £28 for a 100ml bottle.

However, Kloris is currently offering an exclusive 10% discount code for readers who use the code MIST10 at checkout, reducing it to £25.20. There are more than 200 nights of enhanced sleep in a single Kloris bottle, which works out at less than 11p per night.

Strength

The strength of each sleep mist correlates directly with cost, in my view. Whilst The White Company sleep mist is more affordable per milliletre, I found it needed nearly three times as many sprays to achieve the same intensity of fragrance that the Kloris sleep mist produces.

With Kloris, I only require two sprays for the entire bed to be surrounded by a calming aroma, whilst The White Company needs five or six. It became immediately apparent within moments of using The White Company sleep mist that the Kloris alternative would endure longer – and I was correct.

By morning, I couldn’t detect any traces of The White Company, whilst when I use Kloris, the fragrance persists for hours. Each Kloris spray is ‘concentrated aromatherapy, not a diluted fragrance,’ as demonstrated by its longevity.

Fragrance

The White Company sleep mist features top notes of lavender and chamomile, blended with restorative clary sage and soothing vetivert cedarwood. To me, it evokes a crisp spring morning strolling through a lavender meadow and it’s genuinely lovely and subtle.

The Kloris Soothing Mist boasts a considerably more potent fragrance, blending five sleep-enhancing botanicals – lavender, patchouli, ylang-ylang, rose geranium and blood orange. This mix of top-quality essential oils assists in switching our nervous system’s sensory signals into relaxation mode.

Personally, the Kloris Soothing Mist genuinely makes me feel as though I’m lounging in a premium spa or resting in an upmarket hotel. Whilst I appreciate both fragrances, I find the Kloris aroma completely enveloping, almost as though it cocoons me in a blissful haze.

The White Company fragrance is more invigorating and delicate, possibly better suited to those who dislike overly intense scents. It’s also crucial to mention that Kloris advises against spraying directly onto skin, whereas The White Company’s spray can be applied to the body.

Sleep

Now for the ultimate test – which spray helped me nod off quicker? The Kloris Soothing Mist has me asleep within minutes of snuggling into bed and the benefits of using it only improve with time as one’s body links ‘bedtime mode’ with the fragrance.

Nightly application reinforces the association, and now when I enter my bedroom having sprayed the mist, I immediately feel calmer and prepared for sleep. The White Company Soothing Mist does smell pleasant and calming when climbing into bed, but I wouldn’t claim it directly helps me fall asleep faster.

I favour using this spray as a refresher when I’m in bed with a book, rather than as a remedy for sleeplessness.

Packaging

Both sleep spray bottles are attractive to look at, but those who regularly travel might prefer Kloris as the bottle is 100ml compared to The White Company‘s 150ml, which might not comply with hand luggage liquid limits. The Kloris sleep spray comes in a dark amber bottle with purple text and gold detailing whilst The White Company follows the brand’s characteristic approach of being understated and neutral without any colours.

I personally prefer The White Company packaging as it complements my bedroom décor better, but I do believe the Kloris bottle appears more luxurious. I’m perfectly happy with either bottle regarding packaging, as both look lovely on my nightstand.

Another alternative with attractive packaging is the NEOM Perfect Night’s Sleep Mist at £26 for 30ml.

Which sleep spray do I prefer?

Ultimately, I want my sleep spray to help me drift off, and the Kloris Soothing Mist triumphs considerably in that regard. It’s slightly pricier than The White Company’s Sleep Soothing Pillow Mist, but the code MIST10 does reduce it to less than 11p-per-night – completely worthwhile in my opinion.

The White Company spray has its role in a bedtime ritual as the gentle lavender fragrance is delightful for simply unwinding, but the Kloris Soothing Mist remains unbeaten as my preferred sleep spray that’s a vital component of my evening routine.
