‘I want to wear a tartan burka’ Pochin speaks at Reform’s Scottish Election launch

A Reform MP has been slammed after claiming she wanted to wear a “Reform tartan burka”.

Sarah Pochin made the comments after her autocue stopped working at Reform’s Scottish Election launch, just seconds after saying her chief of staff would panic because she was about to ad-lib.

Ms Pochin had previously been forced to apologise for offence she may have caused by saying “it drives me mad when I see adverts full of Black people, full of Asian people”.

Addressing the event in Renfrewshire, she said: “Oh my autocue is frozen. The funny thing is about my autocue freezing is that my chief of staff and David Bull will go into a complete panic because once I start to ad-lib the press have a field day. In fact, we were talking about the Reform tartan , whilst I’m just waiting for my autocue, I really wanted to come on in a Reform tartan burka, but I just wasn’t allowed. One day let’s have one of these events that aren’t live streamed and we’ll do all the naughty stuff, we’ll do all the bits that have gone wrong and all the effing and jeffing when we do our pieces to camera and all the rest. It would be hilarious.”

Labour slammed the comments, and pointed out it was not the first time Ms Pochin had sparked controversy. Responding on X, the party said: “It took less than 30 seconds for Sarah Pochin to start making jokes about Muslims after her autocue broke. The same Sarah Pochin who said it drives her mad seeing too many black and Asian people on TV adverts.”

Last year a row emerged over a TalkTV phone-in when Ms Pochin was told a caller “it drives me mad when I see adverts full of black people, full of Asian people”. She said: “It doesn’t reflect our society and I feel that your average white person, average white family is not represented anymore in TV advertising.

“We are talking about adverts, and how many times do you look at an advert and think ‘there’s not a single white person on it. Actually it is, it’s something that has happened, I believe because of the woke liberati that goes on inside this sort of arty farty world, and it when it comes to northern towns like Runcorn that I represent, it is just not representative of the rest of the country. It might be fine inside the M25 but it’s definitely not representative of the rest of the country.”
