F1 group reply to accusations they’re SABOTAGING their very own driver’s automotive in favour of his team-mate
Formula One team Alpine have hit back at suggestions they have been ‘sabotaging’ their own driver to the benefit of his team-mate.
Alpine have had an indifferent start to the new season, with Pierre Gasly eighth in the drivers standings after picking up 15 points from the three races that have taken place so far.
Franco Colapinto, however, has just one. The Argentine driver, 24, is starting his first full season as a driver in Formula One, while his French counterpart has been in the sport since 2017.
Claims of sabotage appear to have stemmed from the Chinese Grand Prix last month, in which Colapinto finished 10th and Gasly came seventh – 49 seconds ahead of his team-mate.
It is understood that Colapinto also faced a wave of online abuse after his involvement in Brit Oliver Bearman‘s high-speed crash in Japan, and that has led to his team speaking out to defend him and insist there is no ‘sabotage.’
‘Franco is our driver and the team has placed its trust in him, just as he has with the team,’ Alpine said in their 1,200-word statement. ‘That is an indication of the commitment we have to Franco and his place in the team with equal footing alongside Pierre.

‘Any questions about sabotage or not giving Franco the same car are completely unfounded, which is why the team felt the need to speak out.
‘There might be times this year when pushing in the development race that upgrades come to one car first, which the team will communicate and be completely transparent about.
‘That being said, the aim will always remain to bring upgrades to both cars where possible.’
They also confirmed that both drivers have been ‘running with the same equipment, barring some small low-performance impacting parts in China due to switching gearbox components.’
Other points in the statement included detailing how Colapinto and Gasly work together, and how Esteban Ocon took the blame for his crash with Colapinto in China.
Alpine will be back in action when Formula One heads to Miami on the opening weekend of May after the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races were cancelled due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
