Rude awakening! Police arrest housebreaking suspect who broke into household dwelling and fell asleep in kid’s mattress
This is the moment a dozing burglary suspect was arrested after apparently nodding off midway through raiding family home on April Fool’s Day.
Nottinghamshire Police said officers were called to a house in the market town of Newark in response to reports it was being burgled in the early hours of April 1.
Upon arrival at around 3.15am, they saw that a window had been smashed.
The officers took the decision to enter the house as they were concerned for the homeowner now that they believed an intruder could be inside.
But instead the scene that greeted them could have been mistaken for an April Fool’s joke.
The house was empty except for a man sleeping on a floor bed next to an infant’s cot in one of the rooms.
The ensuing farce was captured on police bodyworn camera which has been released by the force, showing an officer grabbing the suspect by the arm while his colleagues yell: ‘Get up!’
Dressed in a blue polo shirt and a gold chain, the suspected burglar is still so dazed as he is having handcuffs placed on him that he struggles to get a word out.
A man was arrested on suspicion of burglary in the early hours of April Fool’s Day after falling asleep on the job in a family home in Newark
The force said they were quickly able to established the man was not the homeowner.
The suspect, aged 24, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary, according to police.
Inspector Dale Smith, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: ‘The officers responding to this incident did a great job apprehending a suspect as quickly as they did.
‘Having heard a burglary was in progress, the team made their way there and took action when they suspected an intruder could still be inside the house.
‘As it turned out, the property was completely empty, aside from one man who was lying down on a floor bed in one of the rooms.
‘As shown by our robust response to this burglary report, we will always treat incidents of this nature seriously and act accordingly.
