Last One Laughing followers rage over ‘actually harsh’ finale twist as sequence two winner is topped after ‘lame’ tiebreaker in present first

Fans of Prime Video’s Last One Laughing were left fuming over the ‘harsh’ finale twist as the series two winner was crowned after a tie-breaker in a show first.

The last episode of the second series was released to viewers earlier this week, seeing Mel Giedroyc, Bob Mortimer, Sam Campbell and David Mitchell left battling it out for the Last One Laughing trophy.

With the clock ticking down to the last 40 minutes, host Jimmy Carr revealed that the game would go down to sudden death, with any laughing or smiling provoking an immediate red card seeing the offending comic out of the game.

Reigning champion Bob, 66, managed to wipe out Mel, 57, with a tense head-to-head that saw them having to make animal noises while looking into one another’s eyes.

Then, Peep Show star David, 51, knocked out Bob with a joke about re-naming a night time toilet trip a ‘Chadwick’ – with David exclaiming: ‘I was just chadwicking!’

It left Sam, 34, and David to go head-to-head in one final challenge, feeding each other food from a gold tray while looking at each other.

Host Jimmy revealed that if neither of them laughed during the uncomfortable exchange, then the winner would be decided in a tie-break of who had caused the most laughs on the show through the episodes.

Flashbacks showed Sam making Bob laugh by picking him up off the ground early in the series – but it also showcased David getting two laughs, one from Diane Morgan and another from Bob.

Jimmy crowned David the winner, bringing in the comedians who were out of the competition to hand him the coveted Last One Laughing trophy.

David reacted: ‘That was quite insane because I think we disappeared into a place where there was no laughter.

‘I have to say, for all the bleakness at the end, I am delighted to win, and I think that shows a want of character in me, but I was very pleased.’

While David was overjoyed to take home the win, fans at home were less than impressed with the way that the end of the show was decided.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, fans hit out against the tie-breaker, hitting out that it was ‘anti-climactic’ and would have like to have seen another head-to-head game.

One penned: ‘For season 3 they got to think of a better tiebreaker that ending was so anti climatic it stank.’

Another chimed in: ‘Just watched Last One Laughing final and although I love David the correct winner was Sam,’ as a third added: ‘Dave smiled SO many times, Sam never broke once.

‘Plus, they have Dave a point for making Dianne laugh when in fact it was Bob jointly involved (arm wrestle). Really harsh on Sam Campbell.’

Someone else added: ‘Feel as though the producers/Jimmy just wanted to invite David back next year because Sam was the clear winner. It’s also called last one laughing, not who made the most laugh.’

‘David Mitchell CLEARLY laughed when him and Sam were Lady & Tramping the Eclair,’ another complained, as a sixth fumed: ‘ a fourth fumed: ‘What a lame way to end the second series.

‘A house full of comedians and you’re really telling me they couldn’t come up with a better ending between them?’

Another viewer concluded: ‘Bit of an anticlimax. Was good in parts but not a patch on 1st series.’

However, there were plenty of fans who were thrilled by the finale, stepping in to defend the episode, saying: ‘Another great season!’

Someone else said: ‘Congrats to David Mitchell – a more than worthy winner. That head to head with the food was brilliant.’

It comes after Last One Laughing fans were left furious over the ‘most unfair red card in the show’s history’ as one comedian was singled out by Jimmy in a ‘dirty play’ move.

As the fifth episode rolled round with still a large number of comedians playing for the win, Jimmy stepped in to ‘dirty play’ one of the stars who weren’t cracking.

Romesh Ranganathan was still in the game alongside Mel, Sam, David and Bob.

Jimmy called Romesh, 48, into the locker room before appearing as a talking head through a hole carved into a cupboard, pitching a number of mock crossover TV shows to the comic.

Jimmy was seen saying: ‘Your manager won’t let me anywhere near you, Romesh, but I want to pitch you some ideas for shows.

‘You know how you’re always doing shows with your mum? I thought you could do a show with my mum, and it’s just you sort of travelling around with an urn.

‘I’ve got another great idea, Jimmy and Romesh’s Cannon Fodder, we travel around Britain but everywhere we go, we get fired from a cannon.’

As Romesh walked away and shook his head, Jimmy continued: ‘What about Jimmy and Romesh’s Naked Attraction? We take off our clothes and see if we’re attracted to each other.’

It was then that Romesh finally cracked, letting out a giggle and putting his hands over his face as the two laughed at one another.

Heading back into the main room, Romesh was left fuming: ‘I’m done. That was bulls**t man. Can I be honest? I thought what happened to me was unfair.

‘There’s jokers, there’s head to heads, but nowhere did it say that Jimmy Carr will emerge as a surprise from a cupboard. It was like a sniper, it was so out of order.’

Nonetheless, Romesh was out the game and agreed to head back to the control room, leaving Sam, Bob, David and Mel to battle it out.

He told Jimmy on the way: ‘That was a d**k move.’

And fans at home were not best pleased either, taking to social media site X, formerly Twitter, and Reddit to complain over the ‘unfair’ move.

One penned: ‘That was DIRTY play on Romesh. I 100% agree about it being unfair,’ as another chimed in: ‘Maybe the most unfair red card so far.’

Someone else added: ‘I know it’s a laugh and it shouldn’t matter but Romesh got absolutely dogged in this episode. If it happens to everyone then fair enough.’

‘I know he’s playing around but I think Romesh is right and he shouldn’t be out because jimmy singled him out,’ a fourth wrote.

A fifth penned, noting Jimmy could’ve picked on his co-stars who hadn’t yet had a laugh or smile: ‘Harsh!!! Can’t go after Romesh like that!! At least go after David or Sam who don’t have cards!’

It comes after Last One Laughing confirmed it will return for a third series – just hours after the newest episodes dropped on Prime Video earlier this month.

The second series debuted on March 19, with a whole host of much-loved comedians taking part against reigning champion Bob Mortimer.

The premise sees these comics in close quarters for six hours – while trying to make the others crack up or smile to get them out of the game.

Once a contestant has laughed or smiled twice, they are eliminated from the contest.

According to The Sun, series three will begin filming in the spring to be aired next year – while a special will go out at Halloween.

A show insider told the publication: ‘Last One Laughing is unquestionably one of the most talked-about TV shows of the past year, and it’s not a huge surprise that more has now been ordered.

‘But no one expected them to reveal there’d be a new season and a special coming out in the same year.

‘At the rate at which it’s gaining momentum, the calibre of comedian they’ll attract for series three will be off the scale.’

Amazon boss Tara Erer said of the programme: ‘We’ve already made this format in over 20 countries. Wherever it goes, it becomes a huge hit.

‘With the UK, we knew it would be successful. But the scale at which it grew was a welcome surprise.’

Asked if it will keep coming back, she added: ‘That’s the goal. I think it can go on and on and keep the quality at the level that we started with.’

Both series to date have been presented by Jimmy Carr and Roisin Conaty.

The first edition saw legendary Bob Mortimer take the win, triumphing over Richard Ayoade in a tense final face-off with a series of one-liner jokes.

Bob, 66, returned for series two to defend his champion status, but with brand new opponents this time that he’s tasked with cracking.

This includes Alan Carr, David Mitchell, Romesh Ranganathan, Diane Morgan, Mel Giedroyc, Maisie Adam, Gbemsiola Ikumelo, Amy Gledhill and Sam Campbell.

Reigning winner Bob – who is still in the competition as the final rolls round this week – revealed who his biggest threat is among the new competitors.

He admitted it would be a struggle stifling a laugh around The Weakest Link host Romesh, telling The Metro: ‘I thought: ‘He’s going to hit me with something any minute now.’

While Diane agreed, as she said of Romesh: ‘When he looks sad it’s even funnier’.

Bob, 66, took home the crown in the debut series last year when he finally cracked co-star Richard Ayoade with a series of one-liners from his joke book

The first three of the six episodes have been confirmed to hit the streaming service on March 19, with two more to follow on March 26.

Viewers will have to wait for the finale, which will be available to watch in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide – as the last episode drops on April 2.

Prime Video teased of the series: ‘It’s not just their rivals they need to watch out for.

‘The show is packed with comedy cameos, format twists and surprises designed to elicit laughs from both players and viewers alike.’

The line-up for the hotly anticipated second series was confirmed last year, with fans quickly flocking to X, formerly Twitter, to express their delight.

One said of the star-studded lineup: ‘Epic line up,’ as a second chimed in: ‘Romesh could smash this!!’

‘I think this is the best show ever created,’ a third wrote, while a fourth added: ‘Bob to retain his crown. All hail king bob.’

‘David Mitchell v Bob is going to be an all-timer,’ another penned, while someone else agreed: ‘The casting on this one!! You don’t want to be around Sam Campbell.’

‘So excited!! First season was so good. This line up looks like its going to be as good as the first season,’ someone else concluded.

Elsewhere, the Last One Laughing rich list was revealed as the cast’s bumper bank balances were revealed.
