  • A sex offender who stabbed himself in the neck during a confrontation with an online vigilante group has vowed never to own a computer again.
  • Stephen McLoughlin, 59, was caught sending explicit messages to accounts he believed belonged to schoolgirls aged 12 and 13. However, he was actually communicating with the group “Travelled From Nottingham” who expose potential predators.
  • The shocking incident was streamed online outside Kirkby police station in August 2022, showing McLoughlin slashing his throat with a knife. The person filming declared “get an ambulance, he’s cut his throat” as McLoughlin’s cries could be heard.
  • Bolton Crown Court heard McLoughlin sent sexually explicit images and persistently discussed meeting the fake profiles face-to-face. Judge Jeremy Lasker told him: “There is no doubt how far you were willing to go with this ‘child’ if you had the opportunity to do so.”
  • The court heard there were “clear elements of grooming” as McLoughlin purchased gifts for his intended victims. Defence barrister Suzanne Payne said her client viewed self-harm as “the only way out for him and his family”.
  • McLoughlin was jailed for four years after being found guilty of multiple child sexual offences. “He has said he will never own a computer again,” his defence lawyer told the court.
