Keir Starmer vows Labour ‘on aspect of British individuals’ as two-child profit restrict lifts
Keir Starmer said he was proud to be lifting the cruel two-child benefit limit – a move that is expected to lift half a million kids out of poverty – as he admitted the Iran crisis is causing widespread anxiety
Keir Starmer has vowed his Government will “always be on the side of the British people” as the cruel two-child benefit limit lifts.
The Prime Minister hailed the measure, which comes into effect on Monday- saying he was proud to be helping lift half a million kids out of poverty. Mr Starmer said families are anxious about the cost of living, and insisted ministers are making the right long-term decisions in the face of global uncertainty.
He said: “No matter the global uncertainty, my government will always be on the side of the British people in bearing down on the cost of living.
“I will never lose sight of how restless people are for change, and I am proud that today we are lifting nearly half a million children out of poverty, boosting support for pensioners, and delivering the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation.

“I know families across the country are concerned about the conflict in Iran and what it means for the cost of living. We are working closely with international partners to push for a de-escalation in the Middle East and the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz. This is the most effective way to ease the pressure on the cost of living.
“I am clear that our response to the current global situation will define us for a generation, which is why we are taking the right long-term decisions now to ensure we emerge from this as a stronger, more secure nation.”
The two-child limit, brought in by the Tories, limited benefits such as Universal Credit to the first two children in a family. Around 1.5million youngsters are set to benefit from the measure from being lifted.
Alongside the measure, the standard rate of Universal Credit is going up by 6.2% – worth around £265 a year for a single person and £465 for a couple.
Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey responded: “Instead of tackling the cost-of-living crisis, Labour are hitting families and businesses with higher taxes, failing to bring down prices at the pump and refusing to rule out a massive energy bill hike later this year.
“The Prime Minister needs to take the wool out of his ears and start listening. He should take up the Liberal Democrat plan for a 10p cut in fuel duty, and guarantee that families and pensioners won’t see energy bills rise by £500 this year.”
