Birmingham Airport ‘evacuated’ as a whole bunch pressured exterior after ‘incident’

A major UK airport has been evacuated after as officials confirmed an incident has occurred in the terminal’s baggage reclaim and immigration area.

Multiple fire crews are reportedly on the scene as hundreds of passengers have been forced to wait outside due today (April 7) to “safety”.

Multiple images have been posted online showing passengers waiting outside the terminal building as emergency crews investigate the area.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said the evacuation was made as a “precaution” with no reports of flames or injuries.

The incident occurred in the North Terminal with West Midlands Fire Control confirming a domestic fire alarm has been activated in the baggage and immigration area, reports Birmingham Live.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident affecting baggage reclaim and immigration in the North Terminal.

“We are working with emergency partners and as a precaution, passengers have been evacuated from this area only.

“The safety of our people and passengers is our number one priority and further updates will be provided.”

One passenger, named only as Vicky said she found the baggage area “very smokey”. She said: “Arrivals and baggage area was very smokey, chemical like. Bags were still being off loaded. Then alarms went off and we were evacuated. Move from various assembly points and still waiting.

“Lots of assisted people and children all on the sun, waiting. Have been here since 13.20.”

Many passengers have since taken to social media following being evacuated with some just landing being kept on the plane.

Martin Parwar wrote on Facebook: “I’m sitting on the runway .. nobody is allowed to leave the plane.”

Jonathan Rawlinson, who just arrived from Malta, was also told they cannot leave the aircraft.

He said: “My wife and I have just arrived into Birmingham on a flight from our holidays in Malta.

“Our plane landed 15 minute ago but none of the passengers have been allowed off the plane yet. We can also see multiple fire engines through the windows.”

West Midlands said: “We received a report of a domestic fire alarm activation. There are reports of the smell of fire in the baggage area.”
