Full checklist of 40 Santander banks closing in weeks in large blow to British excessive road
Santander will close 40 branches across the UK by the end of May, with the full list of locations and exact closure dates confirmed
Santander is set to shut a number of its high street branches across the UK by the end of May. The Spanish banking firm announced at the beginning of the year that it would be closing 44 of its national outlets, with four already having closed their doors in January.
The bank confirmed an additional 40 branches would cease operations by the end of May, attributing the decision to an increase in customers using online services.
The company revealed that a staggering 96 per cent of customer transactions are now conducted via digital platforms. Santander also said that 291 jobs could potentially be lost due to the imminent closures.
These are the most recent in a series of shutdowns, following the bank’s announcement in March 2025 that it was closing 95 branches, impacting 750 employees.
In July of the previous year, Santander’s then UK chief executive, Mike Regnier, said that approximately 2,000 jobs had been shed in the past year as part of the bank’s restructuring. He hinted at the time that further job losses “might well be” on the horizon.
Santander has committed to replacing any affected branches with “community bankers” via Santander Local stores or shared banking hubs.
The bank says this will maintain access to services for customers in areas impacted by the closures, reports the Mirror.
The latest round of closures will begin by the end of this month, with more to follow in May. The full list of branches affected by the recent cuts, along with their closure dates, are detailed below.
