Nutella jar’s livestream photobomb on Artemis II dubbed ‘biggest free advert in historical past’

Social media fans reckon Nutella has bagged the ‘greatest free advert in history’ after a jar of the chocolate spread photobombed the Artemis II livestream moments before it shattered a historic record

A single jar of Nutella has overshadowed astronauts on the Artemis II mission to the dark side of the Moon by becoming the star of “the greatest free advert in history.”

The tub of the chocolatey spread was launched into viral fame after cinematically drifting across the screen in a livestream in the Orion II spacecraft on Monday. In a shot which looks like it was tailor made by a marketing team, the jar gracefully floated across the cabin with its label perfectly showing under pristine lighting.

Within hours of the clip surfacing, Nutella took to their social media, seizing the marketing opportunity. Reposting the clip on X Nutella said: “Honored to have travelled further than any spread in history.

“Taking spreading smiles to new heights.” They captioned the viral video stating: “Nutella is out of this world.” Comedian Al Murray, the pub landlord, reposted the video, adding: “You can’t pay for product placement like this.”

Another commenters said“This is like a free billion-dollar marketing for Nutella.”

A fellow social media user called the clip “The greatest free advert in history.” Replying to a comment Nutella said: “No budget needed when the spread is already out of this world.”

The Space Agency’s press secretary, Bethany Steven, stated the clip wasn’t part of planned promotional material or intentional product placement. The press secretary stated: “NASA does not select crew meals or food in association with brand partnerships. This was not a product placement.”

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center has also joined in on the fun and tweeted: “Enjoying sweet treats while our Artemis crew takes sweet photos of the Moon!”

The viral clip of the spread spiralling through space was snapped only four minutes before the Artemis II crew made history on Monday by travelling further than any humans in history.. They shattered the Apollo 13’s 1970 distance record of taking astronauts 252,757 miles from our home.

On reaching their record-breaking distance, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen said: “From the cabin of Integrity here, as we surpass the furthest distance humans have ever travelled from planet Earth, we do so in honouring the extraordinary efforts and feats of our predecessors in human space exploration.

“We will continue our journey even further into space before Mother Earth succeeds in pulling us back to everything that we hold dear. But we most importantly choose this moment to challenge this generation and the next to make sure this record is not long-lived.”

The Orion II space craft is scheduled to return to the Earth on Friday splashing down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, nine days after its Florida launch.
